Can preoperative imaging improve TPF flap planning in microtia reconstruction?

A study of 172 patients found that vascular patterns varied significantly, particularly in patients with hemifacial microsomia. CTA helped identify vessel location, spacing, and course—important factors for determining flap design and width.
The findings support preoperative vascular imaging for safer, more reliable TPF flap elevation, especially when hemifacial microsomia is present.

Many patients with breast cancer opt for implant-based breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Prepectoral and subpectoral are the two primary implantation techniques, with implants placed above or below the pectoral muscle, respectively. However, many patients require radiation therapy after surgery, which could potentially be affected by breast implants.
A new study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery finds that prepectoral and subpectoral reconstruction do not significantly affect radiation therapy compared with no reconstruction. However, prepectoral reconstruction may make access to some lymph nodes more difficult in certain cases, and oncologists should plan accordingly.
