The Snow-Filled Boots

During a winter labor assignment, prisoners spent hours carrying stones through deep snow.

One prisoner's boots had holes in the soles.

Snow entered with every step.

When he slowed from pain, a guard shouted angrily.

The Sack That Wouldn't Lift

In early 1944, prisoners were ordered to move heavy sacks of cement across a construction yard at Auschwitz Concentration Camp.

One starving prisoner stared at the sack in front of him.

He had barely eaten for days and no longer had the strength to lift it.

When he failed on his first attempt, a guard shouted from across the yard.

The prisoner tried again, then again.

On the third attempt, he managed to raise the sack onto his shoulder and slowly walked forward while fighting dizziness.

Behind him came shouting to move faster.

He reached the top just as darkness settled over the camp.

The Endless Trench

Prisoners dug a trench that seemed to stretch forever.

Hour after hour they moved dirt with worn-out shovels.

One exhausted worker leaned briefly on his shovel to rest.

A guard immediately noticed and shouted at him from the trench edge.

The prisoner straightened up and resumed digging without a word.
