🗣️ … I remember having the opportunity to study/teach abroad in Camden, New South Wales Australia when I was finishing my Master’s degree in Curriculum & Teaching from Michigan State University (ranked #1 for Study Abroad). On the particular day I had one of my students tell me during the closure of my lesson… “Mr. Waters I want to go to college in America.” I was CONVICTED at that very moment!! Australia has some of the finest universities I have ever seen, nonetheless this student dreamed of traveling to a different hemisphere on the other side of the world to go to college. I was CONVICTED because I had to ask myself… WHAT ARE YOU (MR. WATERS) GOING TO DO WHEN YOU GET BACK TO AMERICA TO ENSURE THAT ALL STUDENTS (ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO LOOK LIKE YOU) ARE PREPARED TO COMPETE WITH STUDENTS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD??? As educators we know we are pressured to have our students prepared and perform well on state and/or local assessments, but what are we doing to prepare our students to COMPETE on a GLOBAL EDUCATIONAL STAGE? When you have a student who YOU are TEACHING tell YOU that they are working and preparing themselves to come to YOUR COUNTRY and take the SEAT of one of your NATIVE STUDENTS that “HITS DIFFERENTLY!” Since that moment on, I have been extremely conscientious (despite the pressure of annual assessments) to ensure that students entrusted in my care are prepared for international competition. Until we SEE and UNDERSTAND that our competition is beyond our state boundaries and jurisdictions, we will never be prepared to have this type of conversation. 🗣️ … Having the RIGHT PEOPLE in the RIGHT SEATS is a wonderful thing for a Leader. On the other hand, having the RIGHT PERSON in the WRONG SEAT or better yet… just having the WRONG PERSON can be a Nightmare for any Leader. It is imperative that leaders are able to assess their Teams and ensure that the RIGHT PEOPLE are moving in the RIGHT DIRECTION. That comes from the Leader being “clear, consistent and concise” with their Vision!! Strategic with their Actions!! Reflective in their Decisions and Intentional with the Leadership Development of their Team!! Once a Leader gets a sense that their Team is focused on the Same Goal and moving in sync towards the Same Goal… The Magic Really Happens!! A lot of great Teams were unsuccessful, not because they LACKED TALENT, but because the RIGHT PEOPLE were not MOVING (TOGETHER) in the RIGHT DIRECTION!!

🗣️ … As a school leader you CANNOT LEAD FROM YOUR OFFICE!! It is imperative that you are “out in front” and VISIBLE!! Your community needs to SEE YOU!! Your staff needs to SEE YOU!! Most importantly your STUDENTS NEED TO SEE YOU!! When I was a high school principal, I remember a young lady asking me if I was a Hall Monitor because she always saw me in the hallways!! She was a senior and her perception of the “Principal” was someone who is always in their office. It really broke my heart knowing that throughout her 12 years of schooling this is what she thought of principals. Leaders: DO NOT FALL INTO THAT TRAP!! BE VISIBLE!! BE SEEN!! BE PRESENT!! EARN YOUR CREDIBILITY AS A LEADER!! Your office can be a very comfortable place…but in order to LEAD YOUR SCHOOL you have to know what is HAPPENING IN YOUR SCHOOL!! “VISIBILITY LEADS TO CREDIBILITY!!”

🗣️ … When I first became a Principal I made time during the summer to schedule time with EVERY staff member if their schedule allowed. I wanted to take the time to hear from them individually in order for me to get a “feel” for the school before the first day of classes. I was surprised to see how many people took advantage of the opportunity (over 90%). To keep it consistent I asked them all the same 4 questions in order for me to identify “trends” and have a plan in place before the school year started. What would have taken me 6 weeks to figure out… only took me a few days. The quantitative and qualitative data I got was invaluable!! I encourage any new principal to take the time to meet with staff and ask these 4 questions. I promise you will not regret the time spent on the front end that will save you a lot of heartache, pain and time on the backend.
