Post #46: SC Small Town Series — Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

🌴 20 Ways to Fall in Love with the Grand Strand

Before we dive into the magic of Myrtle Beach, I want to start with the heart behind this journey.

💙 I’m Duchess DJ Love — travel educator, storyteller, and believer that travel is an investment in you.
🧸 This is Baby Love — my joy magnet, my road‑trip sidekick, and the little heartbeat that keeps every adventure light and full of wonder.
✨ And watching over every mile of this series is Lady Lexie — my mom, my compass, and the woman who taught me how to find beauty in the world even on the hardest days.

Myrtle Beach wasn’t just a vacation spot for her.
It was her favorite destination, her happy place, her ocean‑breeze sanctuary.
The Grand Strand was where she laughed, rested, healed, and felt the world slow down long enough for her to breathe.

So every time Baby Love and I step onto this sand…
every time we walk a pier, watch a sunset, or feel the salt air on our skin…
we honor her.

This post isn’t just about Myrtle Beach.
It’s about legacy.
It’s about love.
It’s about carrying her joy forward — one small town, one smile, one memory at a time.

And today, standing inside the iconic Apache Pier frame, Baby Love and I felt that familiar warmth — the kind that whispers, “You’re right where you’re supposed to be.”

So let’s explore the Grand Strand the way Lady Lexie loved it…
with wide‑open hearts, sandy feet, and a sense of wonder that never gets old.

💙 SC SMALL TOWN SERIES — POST #44 - McBee, South Carolina — The Peach Capital of the Sandhills

🍑 McBee Peach Season — May Magic in the Sandhills

May in South Carolina means one thing: peaches, sunshine, and small‑town charm.

And nowhere does that better than McBee, a Sandhills gem known for its orchards, roadside stands, and the kind of Southern sweetness you can taste before you even take a bite.

Here are the most iconic McBee stops to add to your Carolina adventures:

🍑 1. McLeod Farms — McBee May–August Fresh peaches, homemade ice cream, a bakery full of Southern treats, and a farm market that feels like summer in a building.

🌾 2. The Big Red Barn — McBee May–July A local landmark offering produce, jams, jellies, and that classic McBee hospitality that keeps families coming back for generations.

🍨 3. Peaches & Cream Ice Cream Shop — McBee May–September Hand‑scooped peach ice cream, milkshakes, and the kind of front‑porch energy that defines small‑town summer.

🚜 4. McBee Farmers Market — McBee Saturdays in May Local produce, flowers, baked goods, and the heartbeat of the community — neighbors supporting neighbors.

🌅 5. Sandhills Sunset Over the Orchards — McBee Daily Rows of peach trees glowing gold at dusk — a Carolina postcard moment you’ll never forget.

💙 SC SMALL TOWN SERIES — A Journey Through South Carolina’s Hidden Gems

McBee surprised me today. And if you’ve been following this series, you already know Baby Love and I have been crisscrossing the state uncovering the stories, flavors, and hometown magic tucked inside our small towns.

So far, we’ve explored:
✨ Ruby — The Jewel City
✨ Hartsville — creativity, history, and heart
✨ Cheraw — the two‑buffet showdown
✨ Lydia — firehouse legacy + Mr. B’s Southern comfort
✨ Patrick — sacred ground + Sugarloaf memories
✨ Graniteville — mill history + resilience
✨ Johnston — the Peach Capital
✨ Ward — tiny, quiet, and full of Carolina character

🍑 SC SMALL TOWN SERIES — POST #43 - Johnston, South Carolina

📍The Peach Capital of the World — where history, harvest, and hometown pride collide.

Some towns have a nickname.
Johnston has a crown.

Known far and wide as the Peach Capital of the World, this little Edgefield County gem has been feeding South Carolina’s soul — and its fruit baskets — for generations. But Johnston isn’t just about peaches. It’s about people, pride, and a past rooted in the rails.

Long before the murals, the festivals, and the welcome signs…
Johnston began as a simple railroad stop in 1868 — a Charlotte Station on the old Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta Railroad. That single line of track changed everything. It brought farmers, merchants, and opportunity. It turned fields into markets. It turned a stop into a town.

By the early 1900s, Johnston was booming — cotton, peaches, and commerce flowing through like lifeblood. And the town never forgot where it came from.

Today, Johnston wears its history proudly:

🎨 The Peach Mural
A bright, joyful welcome that celebrates the town’s agricultural legacy and the families who built it.

🍑 Peach Capital Signage
Bold, iconic, and instantly recognizable — a reminder that this town feeds more than just the state.

📜 Historic Marker
Telling the story of how a railroad stop became a thriving market town, incorporated in 1875 and chartered in 1897.

🏛️ Old Town Hall (1933)
Still standing strong — a symbol of community, resilience, and small‑town leadership.

Baby Love looked at the mural and said,
“Duchess… this town doesn’t just grow peaches. It grows pride.”
And he’s right — Johnston is a place where heritage is honored, where agriculture still matters, and where small‑town charm is as sweet as the fruit it’s famous for.

Johnston proves that South Carolina’s heart beats strongest in its small towns — where history is painted on walls, written on markers, and lived every single day.

💙 SC SMALL TOWN SERIES — POST #42 - Ward, South Carolina

A tiny town with timeless charm.

📍Some towns whisper.
Ward waves. Welcome to Ward!

Sitting quietly in Saluda County, Ward is the kind of place where the post office still feels like the heartbeat of the community, the water tower watches over everyone like an old friend, and the railroad caboose reminds you that this little town once moved with the rhythm of the rails.

Ward may be small — but it’s rich in the kind of details that make small‑town South Carolina unforgettable:

📬 The Post Office
A classic brick building that still anchors the town, standing strong through generations of letters, stories, and everyday life.

🚂 The Southern Caboose
A bright red reminder of Ward’s railroad past — a symbol of movement, connection, and the days when trains stitched small towns together.

🕰️ The Town Clock
A black iron beauty that feels like it belongs in a movie scene — marking time in a place where life moves slower, sweeter, and more intentionally.

🌤️ The Water Tower
Boldly stamped with “WARD,” it rises above the rooftops like a proud signature of small‑town identity.

Baby Love looked around and said,
“Duchess… this town may be tiny, but it’s got BIG personality.”
And he’s right — Ward is the kind of place that reminds you why small towns matter.
They hold history.
They hold community.
They hold heart.

Ward is proof that you don’t need skyscrapers or crowds to have a story worth telling.
Sometimes all you need is a caboose, a clock, a water tower, and a whole lot of pride.

💙 Have you ever passed through Ward

❤️ SC SMALL TOWN SERIES — POST #41 - Hartsville, South Carolina

Small Town. Big Heart.

Every now and then, you find a place that feels like it’s smiling back at you — and that’s Hartsville.
It’s a town that proves size doesn’t define spirit.
From its vibrant downtown to the peaceful waters of Lake Robinson, Hartsville radiates warmth, creativity, and community pride.

The locals call it “Small Town, Big Hartsville,” and they mean it.
You can feel it in the way people wave from their porches, the way businesses support each other, and the way history and innovation coexist side by side.

Baby Love took one look at the water tower and said,
“Duchess… this town’s got heart — and I’m pointing right at it.”
And he did — sunglasses on, smile wide, ready to celebrate another gem in our South Carolina journey.

Hartsville reminds us that small towns aren’t small at all — they’re full of big stories, big dreams, and big hearts.
