TROPICS ROUND-UP | September 25, 2025

All eyes are on Invest 94L (future Imelda) today, as it continues to gather steam near the Dominican Republic. Further organization is expected over the next couple days, and a tropical cyclone should develop over the weekend. Confidence in direct impacts to the Southeast US coast is increasing, as models have trended a bit farther west in recent runs, with many now explicitly depicting a hurricane landfall here.

Still, there's quite a bit of uncertainty in Imelda's potential track/intensity. Some of it has to do with Tropical Storm Humberto, which formed yesterday northeast of the Lesser Antilles. Humberto is expected to explode into a major hurricane this weekend, and this could have some impacts on future Imelda. Given the relatively close proximity of the two storms, the stronger Humberto may try to tug Imelda out to sea a bit more, a solution that persists within some models. However, most of our major high-resolution hurricane models, along with some of our global models, take Imelda inland somewhere from the Carolinas to Florida. We'll know increasingly more about how the two storms might interact and what path Imelda might take as the storms better organize this weekend. Regardless, folks from the Carolinas to Florida should begin their hurricane preparations immediately and closely monitor future Imelda's progress over the coming days.

Elsewhere, Hurricane Gabrielle continues to weaken as it accelerates east toward the Azores.

Night Owls - Check out this Texas throwback!

This ‘EARTH-EATING SUPERCELL’ hovered across the West landscape near Tahoka, as witnessed when tracking storms on June 6th earlier this year. The storm’s outflow kicked loads of dust up in a giant “HABOOB” that connected the ground to the sky!
