Birthday jam!! 🎂 @MilesMusicKid and @JustinWilsonii jam together for the first time! ...And on the day Miles turned 7! 🎈 If you’ve been following Miles’ and LJ’s journey, you may remember that last year when they met in person for the first time, they didn’t have a drum set 🥁… Now 1 year later - their second time meeting in-person - they’re able to jam together for the first time! Miles chose keyboard 🎹 as his instrument this time around. The song Miles chose here is “Say My Name” by @destinyschild (written by @rodneyjerkins et.al.). LJ (“Little Justin”) didn’t know what song Miles would play, and he hadn’t heard this song too many times before, it’s no surprise that LJ catches on pretty quick!! 🔥

This time Miles tested his dad too…😬 BACKSTORY: Miles actually never does ear training… Just the 3 or so times per year that we post these here, that you see. No “practicing” in between. That’s probably why it takes him so long to name the notes. Miles does have perfect pitch, of course (absolute pitch). However he is able to do this, not because he has spent any dedicated time explicitly “learning” it, or “training” his ear. Rather, he has picked up the names of the notes and chords as a happy byproduct of simply playing music that he loves, and knowing what key it’s in. (Hope that makes sense!) #7YearsOld #perfectpitch

When inspiration hits, can’t let a sling get in the way! #7YearsOld BACKSTORY: Back when Miles was 2 yrs (before we knew that he would later develop an interest in playing music), we got the cheapest possible keyboard🎹 we could find on Amazon (a Casio SA-76 for less than 50 bucks), just so we could have any kind of musical instrument in our home. Now, years later, 7-year-old Miles came across a sound tone on this old keyboard that reminded him exactly of the instrument used in the Ed Sheeran song, ‘Shivers’ (which he loves, BTW) It’s funny how inspiration works: Even though now, years later, Miles has access to a DAW and all sorts of fancy professional keyboard sounds (thanks to super supportive companies like Arturia🙏🏼!), all it took was him hearing this one unique tone from this old cheap keyboard🎹, and that sparked him to want to re-create the whole song, built around a sample he took of a single note!

That ended up taking a turn! Miles is only 7, so we normally don’t post his original music publicly. But this should give you an idea of what it’s like watching him at work. He experiments, he tries things, he arrives at some really dope sounds… then he keeps going 🔥🔥 …But most importantly he has fun 💙
