While we had Tropical Storm Arthur two weeks ago and Tropical Storm Bertha earlier this week, it is difficult at best to say how this hurricane season will go based on just the activity we have had so far.

Only one hurricane season has had three tropical or subtropical cyclones before June 1st: 1951. In that year, a tropical storm formed in January, followed by Hurricane Able and a tropical depression in May.

According to Colorado State University tropical scientist Phil Klotzbach, only four additional other years in records dating to 1851 produced two storms before June 1.

Three of these five previous seasons had an above-average number of storms and hurricanes.

That said, looking ahead at forecast conditions rather than history, an above-average hurricane season is anticipated by many forecast groups, including The Weather Company and NOAA.

Strong thunderstorms possible Friday night in Dallas-Fort Worth, kicking off a wet weekend
Not all of North Texas will see severe weather, but some storms could have the potential to produce hail and damaging winds up to 70 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

North Texas is set for a wet weekend.

Thunderstorms are expected to move through Dallas-Fort Worth late Friday night, and some of them could be strong to severe, according to KXAS-TV (NBC5) meteorologist Grant Johnston.

Not all of North Texas will see severe weather, but some storms could have the potential to produce hail and damaging winds up to 70 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

The greatest chance for severe storms is expected in Tarrant and Denton counties and areas west of Dallas-Fort Worth, according to the weather service.

Storms in Dallas-Fort Worth are most likely around 9 p.m. Friday and into the overnight hours, according to Johnston.

“It kind of diminishes only to develop Saturday,” Johnston said.

Severe weather is not expected on Saturday, but widespread showers and storms could be possible throughout the day, according to the weather service. The chance of rain decreases on Sunday, and the beginning of next week looks dry, according to Johnston.

Portions of Dallas-Fort Worth could pick up between 2 to 3 inches of rain by the end of the weekend. On average the area records about 4.9 inches for the entire month of May, according to the weather service.

The almanac is predicting that this winter will be filled with so many ups and downs on the thermometer, that we'll feel like we're on a "Polar Coaster." The Farmers' Almanac offers 16 months of weather forecasts across seven zones. The almanac says that those of us in the northeast can expect colder weather than normal for most of the winter with above-normal precipitation.
