In all truthfulness, Dead Man’s Life was [is?] hardly a blip on the radar from all that emanates in the Los Angeles hardcore scene. They were never popular, had “proper” releases, or even played shows outside L.A.’s city boundaries.
Formed in 2015, the foursome featured vocalist Andrew Beattie of powerviolence ensembles No Comment, Man is the Bastard, and Low Threat Profile. Beattie’s resume in this subgenre encompasses a discography of seminal releases dating back to the late 1980s.
Dead Man Life’s hardcore reality is presented via the nine songs of their 2018 debut, Dead Man’s Life, re-released in 2025 by Mindpower Records. Recorded via a series of sessions at studios across Southern California, what resulted is an assemblage of fiery, concise cuts steered via Beattie’s delivery, all backed by guitarist Luis Estefania, bassist Steve Wilenkin, and drummer Wal Rashidi.
Engineered by Maria Baglien and Michael Rozon, and mixed by Sergio J. Chavez, the sub-ten-minute Dead Man’s Life hops in gear with “Stop/Start,” says its succinct piece over the ensuing seven tracks, and disintegrates with finale “La Muerte.” Songs tackle pain, fear, sadness, drudgery, distress, and humanity’s future.
Despite a comparatively narrow window of activity, the group never really disbanded, but rather went on hiatus. Only time will tell if the full resuscitation of Dead Man’s Life is imminent.
