At Kalihiwai Beach, on Kauai’s North Shore, an interpretive display provides a glimpse into destructive tsunamis that hit the beach community in 1946 and 1957. The April 1st, 1946 tsunami, “ran up some 20 feet” into the valley, killing six people in the valley while killing eleven other people in other parts of Kauai. “Grandpa noticed the water and got us all out of the house and up on the hill,” recounted Frances Akana, a 1946 tsunami survivor. “We could hear the waves coming and crash the houses. The wave took our house and smashed it.” The 1957 tsunami was even larger (22 feet runup), but fortunately no one was killed on Kauai.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has issued a Tsunami Warning for the entire State of Hawaii, including Kauai, following a massive magnitude 8.7–8.8 earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday, July 29th, 2025.
