Youth sports can demand a lot from families. Practices, tournaments, travel, recruiting, and packed weekends can sometimes force parents and athletes to make difficult choices about where faith fits into the schedule.

In this episode of Booyah Sports Network, I sit down with Shaun Smithson, Executive Vice President of Club Sports for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, to talk about the growing tension between faith and competitive youth sports.

Can families pursue high-level athletics without pushing faith to the side? What role should coaches and sports organizations play? And does it really have to be one or the other?

Does that mean they’re no longer interested?

Not necessarily.

Coach Jeff Huebner explains something I think a lot of athletes and parents forget during the recruiting process. College coaches aren’t just standing in a gym coaching volleyball all day. They’re dealing with recruiting, practices, film, emails, administrative work, schedules, recruiting calendars and a ton of other responsibilities.

Sometimes communication stops because the coach isn’t interested. But sometimes your message simply got buried or there are recruiting rules affecting what they can do at that particular time.

So what should you do?

Jeff explains why consistent communication and continuing to send updates can be some of the most important recruiting advice an athlete can follow.

WAIT… THAT’S ILLEGAL?! 🏐

It’s called screening, and if you’ve watched high school volleyball, you’ve probably seen teams try some version of it.

Players near the net bunch together while their teammate serves from behind them, making it harder for the receiving team to see the server and track the flight of the ball.

But the rule has changed.

Players can no longer stand there with their hands raised above their heads creating that obstruction.

TASO Volleyball President Russell Larson explains what constitutes a screen and what players are allowed to do now.

And yes… there’s a reason you’re seeing players put their hands behind their heads.

THAT’S NOT A DOUBLE?! 🏐

The volleyball rule on second contact has changed, and this one is going to surprise a lot of players and parents.

A spinning ball does NOT automatically mean double contact. In fact, multiple contact during one attempt on the second hit can be legal when the ball stays on your side and is played to a teammate.

But send that second contact over the net or into a legal block? Now the referee has a different judgment to make.

Your athlete can graduate, be committed to a college program and think everything is ready to go… but there’s still one important piece of paperwork that needs to get there.

The FINAL official high school transcript.

Coach Jeff Huebner explains why athletes should talk with their counselor BEFORE everyone leaves for summer and make sure that transcript gets sent to the eligibility center as soon as possible.

Because if it isn’t received and the athlete’s eligibility isn’t cleared, they may not be able to practice or play.

After everything it takes to get recruited, don’t let something this simple create a problem when your athlete gets to college.
