Juneteenth is more than a date in history—it is a celebration of freedom, resilience, culture, and the enduring spirit of Black communities. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, enslaved people in Texas finally learned of their freedom. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom delayed is not freedom denied, and that the pursuit of equity and opportunity continues today.

At Being Black in Craft, Juneteenth serves as both a celebration and a reflection. We honor the generations who came before us, whose sacrifices, creativity, and determination paved the way for Black professionals, entrepreneurs, and innovators across every corner of the fermentation industry. From beer and wine to spirits, cider, mead, and beyond, Black voices have always been part of the story—even when those contributions were overlooked or left untold.

Today, we celebrate the makers, founders, brewers, vintners, distillers, educators, and advocates who are shaping the future of craft beverages. We celebrate the traditions, recipes, and cultural influences that continue to enrich our industry. Most importantly, we celebrate community—the power of gathering, sharing stories, and creating spaces where everyone can be seen, heard, and valued.

As we reflect on Juneteenth, we encourage everyone to learn, listen, support Black-owned businesses, and recognize the rich history and contributions of Black people in craft. Progress happens when stories are shared, barriers are removed, and opportunities are extended to future generations.

Today we celebrate freedom. We honor history. We amplify voices. And we continue building a more inclusive craft beverage industry for all.
