The First All Race Elections Held In South Africa

🇿🇦

The first all-race elections kicked off on April 26, 1994, in South Africa, and for three days, citizens stood in lines longer than the ones at a Black Friday sale—often for hours!

This monumental event crowned South Africa's first Black President, none other than the legendary Nelson Mandela. His party, the African National Congress (ANC), snagged a whopping 62.65%, or 12,237,655 votes out of 19,726,579—talk about a landslide victory!

They also scooped up 252 seats faster than you can say “apartheid is over!” April 27 is now celebrated as "Freedom Day," which is basically a national excuse to party like it’s 1994!

First African American ever drafted by an NBA team

The first African American to get drafted by an NBA team was Chuck Cooper, who was plucked by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the 1950 draft—talk about a lucky charm!

He was picked at the 13th overall spot, because why not go for a baker’s dozen, right?

Cooper’s selection opened the floodgates for other African American players to jump into the NBA pool, and let’s just say, they made quite a splash!
