The Federal Government is looking forward to a huge reduction in reliance on petrol with about $175 million worth of investments in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles.

At least 700 CNG-powered buses are expected.

Thousands of conversion kits and centres are underway.
Yesterday, the first batch of 64 buses were given to Labour centres, students and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, who inaugurated the vehicles at A*o Villa yesterday, described them as a major step in curbing inflation, now on a downward trend.

Project Director of the Presidential Initiative on CNG, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, said: “Since our founding exactly one year ago when Mr. President announced the Presidential CNG initiative, we’ve been able to move the nation forward.
Nigeria had seven conversion centres this time last year. Today, we can boast of over 125.

“We’ve tracked over $175 million investments in the sector coming into mother stations. An additional 12 mother stations have been commissioned between last year and today.

“We’ve seen additional refuelling stations being invested in; about 75 of them are currently under construction, and the commissioning of about 12 already this year. We expect another 25 before the end of the year.

The Technical Sub-Committee on Domestic Sales of Crude Oil in Local Currency, on Sunday, confirmed that the supply of crude in naira by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery is to begin on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.

On September 13, 2024, the committee announced that the Federal Executive Council under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu approved the sale of crude to local refineries in naira and the corresponding purchase of petroleum products in naira.

“From October 1, NNPC will commence the supply of about 385kbpd (385,000 barrels per day) of crude oil to the Dangote refinery to be paid for in naira,” the committee had declared.

The Chairman of the Technical Sub-Committee is Zacch Adedeji, who doubles as Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

When contacted on Sunday and asked if the plan for the crude oil supply to the $20bn Lekki-based plant is still intact, the Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, Mr Dare Adekanmbi, responded in the affirmative.

He said, “I can confirm to you that the Chairman, Sub-Technical Committee, Zacch Adedeji, is working day and night to ensure that things go according to plans. He knows how important it is to have the agreement implemented as has been planned for the benefit of Nigerians.”

This implies that NNPC is to supply about 11.5 million barrels of crude oil to the Dantote refinery monthly, and based on the deal, the plant will release equivalent volumes of refined diesel and petrol to the domestic market also in naira.
The panel explained in September that this initiative would help reduce pressure on the naira, eliminate unnecessary transaction costs, and improve the availability of petroleum products across the country.

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo warned yesterday that officials of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) found culpable in the apartment-for-prison scandal involving notorious cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye a.k.a. Bobrisky would not go unpunished.

The social and traditional media has trended lately with stories of how some NCoS officials allegedly arranged a private apartment for the cross-dresser where he spent his jail term instead of the prison cell after he was sentenced to six months imprisonment by a federal high court in Lagos for naira abuse.

Tunji-Ojo, who spoke at a media briefing in Abuja to mark his one year in office, vowed that no personnel or officer of the Nigeria Correctional Service found in the ongoing probe to be involved in the scandal would be spared.

He promised that as was indicated by the calibre of people in the panel probing the incident, the investigation would be diligent, detailed and far reaching to bring sanity and discipline to the Correctional Service environment.

The minister also said Nigerians in diaspora would henceforth enjoy seamless acquisition of passports, especially those in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
This will come into effect as the Federal Government activates Automated Passport Application system by October.

The minister said that all backlogs of passports had been cleared, noting that the Nigeria Immigration Service, (NIS) no longer owes its service providers regarding printing and supply of passports.

“We now have about 80,000 Passports in our stocks, both the 32 pages and the 70 pages,” he said.

He added that henceforth, Nigerians in the diaspora would not need to travel from one country to another to obtained Passports, noting that the era in which they wasted working hours and resources and risked their lives on long journey was gone.

The Lagos and Ogun state governments have issued warnings to residents living in flood-prone areas, particularly along riverbanks, to temporarily relocate or brace for potential flooding ahead of the planned release of water from the Oyan dam.

The release of excess water from the dam, managed by the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority, OORBDA is part of an annual process to manage dam levels during the rainy season.

Recall that residents of Isheri Riverview estate and other residential surroundings in Warewa and OPIC in Obafemi Owode Local government area were last year sacked by flooding following a water surge induced by the release of excess water from the dam.

To avoid a repeat of this, both the Lagos and Ogun state governments have advised communities in low-lying areas to take necessary precautions, including relocating to safer ground, as the release could cause rivers to overflow, leading to severe flooding.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab told Saturday PUNCH that, the Federal had commenced the dredging of rivers along the corridor of the dam to avoid devastating flooding incidents such as the one that occurred in Maiduguri.

“We have done the advocacy, we have told people to leave the low line areas. We are collaborating with the Ogun state government on how we can mitigate the impact of the release.

“Those staying on the low line areas have to leave, particularly those at Ajilete and other areas around Owode-Onirin because we saw what happened in Maiduguri, it will be child’s play.

Five individuals involved in the Offa robbery incidents have been found guilty of illegal possession of fi****ms, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.

Justice Haleemah Salman of the Kwara State High Court stated that the offences are punishable by death.

The incident, which occurred at five banks in Offa Local Government Area in 2018, left no fewer than 32 people dead, including nine police officers, two of whom were women.

The convicted individuals include Ayoade Akinnibosun, Azeez Salahudeen, Niyi Ogundiran, Ibikunle Ogunleye, and Adeola Abraham.

The sixth suspect, Michael Adikwu, a retired police officer, died in custody before the trial commenced.

Presiding over the case, Justice Haleemah Salman handed down the death sentence to the five suspects after a six-year trial that drew widespread attention.

The convicts faced a five-count charge, including conspiracy, culpable homicide, illegal possession of fi****ms, and armed robbery.

Delivering her judgment, which spanned over four hours, Justice Salman found the accused guilty of robbing and killing innocent citizens.

She sentenced them to d@ath by hanging for their roles in the heinous crime.

Additionally, the court imposed a three-year prison sentence on the convicts for illegal possession of fi****ms, in line with Nigeria’s penal code.

In her ruling, Justice Salman remarked, “The convicts acted contrary to the law and allowed their connections with those in power at the time to lead them astray.”

Popular crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has denied a bribery allegation levelled against him by a social media influencer, Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan.

In a viral audio released by VeryDarkMan, Bobrisky alleged that some unnamed Economic and Financial Crimes Commission operatives collected N15 million from him to drop money laundering charges against him.

Reacting to the viral audio in a statement on Tuesday, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, said the Commission’s Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, had ordered an immediate investigation into the matter.

However, in an Instagram post on Wednesday morning, Bobirsky denied bribing any EFCC officer to drop money laundering charges against him, saying that he served his jail term.

The controversial social media sensation also described the viral voice recording as fake, stressing that the claim that he was never in prison was false and should be ignored.

He wrote, “My attention has been drawn to a fake voice recording circulating on the internet that I paid EFCC 15 million naira, and that I was never in prison… I didn’t pay any EFCC money, which is a very big lie. I served my term in full, and I came out. Discard any false information.”

Missouri Ex@cutes Marcellus Williams Despite Controversy

Marcellus Williams, 55, was put to dea+h by lethal injection Tuesday evening at the state prison in Bonne Terre, Missouri. His murder conviction was questioned by a prosecutor, and his attorneys filed appeals citing new evidence, including alleged jury bias and contamination of the murd@r weapon.

Williams maintained his innocence until the end, according to his attorney, Larry Komp.

The US Supreme Court denied a stay, despite concerns from Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Missouri's governor and supreme court also refused to grant a stay.

Governor Mike Parson stated that the ex@cution brought "finality" to the decades-long case.

Israel announced dozens of new air strikes on Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon Tuesday, a day after 492 people, including 35 children, were killed in the deadliest bombardment since a devastating war in 2006.

Israel’s overnight strikes on southern Lebanon came after it said it had killed a “large number” of militants when it hit about 1,600 suspected Hezbollah targets around the country.

Hezbollah said Tuesday it had launched volleys of missiles at Israeli military bases, hours after 180 of its projectiles and an unmanned aerial vehicle crossed into Israeli airspace, sending people in the city of Haifa running for shelter.

The Israeli military said more than 50 projectiles were fired into northern Israel in less than 10 minutes on Tuesday morning, most of which were intercepted
In Lebanon, Monday’s raids killed 492 people, including 35 children and 58 women, and wounded 1,645, according to the health ministry, which said “thousands of families” had fled their homes.

“Everyone is heading (to Lebanese capital Beirut) with their children and their belongings — it’s the first time we see such panic since 2006,” said Lebanese journalist Nazir Reda, who was driving to his hometown near the Israeli border to get his family away from the violence.

Longtime foes Hezbollah and Israel have been locked in near-daily cross-border exchanges of fire for nearly a year, since Palestinian militant group
Hamas staged an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7.
