TOP 10 Things You May Not Have Considered
About Short Term Rentals in Dallas
1. The Dallas Short Term Rental Alliance opposes Party Houses (less than 1% of Dallas STRs) and has lobbied the platforms to remove nuisance listings.
2. During the Pandemic, short term rental owners opened their rental units to help health care workers keep their families safe by offering a place to shower and rest.
3. During the winter storm, short term rental owners again opened their rental units to help neighbors with no electricity, heat or burst and frozen pipes.
4. Short term rentals bring travel dollars into neighborhoods. Hosts often refer guests to local businesses like restaurants, coffee shops, book stores and retail stores that are not in the central business and tourism areas.
5. Short Term Rentals hire local cleaning services, landscapers, and contractors, creating ripples of economic impact.
6. Short Term Rentals pay state sales tax, Dallas hotel tax, and, of course, tax on the income. Dallas hasn't figured out how to collect the tax efficiently and effectively, but the Dallas Short Term Rental Alliance is helping Dallas by proposing a plan to regulate STR's, ban party houses, and increase collection of tax revenues.
7. STR's offer choice and economy for traveling nurses, students doing an internship - folks needing housing but for less than the usual one year lease.
8. All Short Term Rentals are required to register with the City of Dallas and Dallas STRA has a plan to help the city sign up all short term rental owners.
9. Dallas Short Term Rentals are threatened with a new city ordinance that could ban all STRs and lead to years of litigation, cause economic hardship for STR owners and all businesses that benefit from STRs.
10. Dallas needs an efficient, reasonable STR policy that respects neighbors, neighborhoods and private property rights while promoting economic activity. Dallas needs leadership that understands the municipal duties of regulation and enforcement, while not destroying economic activity.
