Tennessee Ernie Ford reached No. 1 on both the Billboard Pop and Best Sellers charts with “Sixteen Tons” — a song that gave a powerful voice to America’s working class.
Originally written and recorded in 1946 by Merle Travis, Sixteen Tons told the hard, honest story of miners, debt, and dignity. When Ford recorded the song, its raw message resonated far beyond country music, crossing over into the pop charts and making history.
The record would go on to top the UK charts for four weeks in January and February of 1956, proving that its message was universal.
Decades later, in 2015, Tennessee Ernie Ford’s unforgettable recording was officially inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry, preserving it as a true American cultural treasure.
