🎥 Another great shoot with our friends at ! Always a blast creating content that captures the outdoor lifestyle.

This project was also my first chance to put the newly released Aputure Storm 400X to work. 💡 It’s a perfect addition to my 1200X and 80Cs, giving me even more flexibility on set. Whether I’m blasting through a window with the 1200X, accenting with the 80Cs, or shaping softer key light with the 400X, the lineup works together seamlessly.

Now I just need Aputure to release an 800X—the perfect replacement for my 600Ds—to really round out the Storm kit. 🙌

Huge thanks to Gruene Outfitters for letting me turn the shop into a mini studio for the day. Can’t wait to share the finished video!

I had maybe 4.2 seconds to take a few pictures of my 3 year old with his first “big” fish, it wiggling and squirming in his little hands. But watching Wilder take his tiny little fishing rod, work the lure, set the hook, and reel in a quality bass was incredible to witness. I just love this kid so much!

🌄 Fly Fishing the Texas Hill Country – Pedernales River 🎣

What a great day to be on the water! 🚣‍♂️🎣

Flows were a little lower than expected considering the amount of rain we’ve received this summer, but we still managed to push our way through, finding some carp and bass along the way. 🐟

Chase Smith () was kind enough to share a new stretch of river with me while also letting me try out some of his latest fly patterns. His Spiral Spook has some wild movement to it. What a cool fly! 🪰

There are a lot of things I enjoy in life, but drifting down a Texas Hill Country river with a fly rod in hand is definitely toward the top of the list.

☕ Morning coffee thoughts ☕

It’s wild to think how far camera technology has come in the past 10–15 years. Drones, gimbals, lighting gear, processing power—everything keeps getting better. What a time to be in this industry! 🎥

That said, I think we’re starting to hit a bit of an imaging plateau. So I jotted down a few features I’d love to see in the next generation of cameras. These could help push things forward in a big way:

• Internal compressed 16-bit RAW video in most pro cameras once RED’s patent expires in 2028
• Internal 32-bit float audio recording across the board
• Cache recording for video (like pre-capture in stills) in flagship hybrid cameras (A1, Z9, R1, etc.)
• Better processing in stills bodies for more oversampled full-frame video options
• Shutter angle control in every camera—cinema or stills
• EL Zone as an exposure tool in most professional cinema cameras
• 8K capture as the new standard, even if delivery is still in 4K, for flexibility in post
• Global shutter sensors as technology improves, to kill rolling shutter once and for all

I picked up the RX1RII a year ago just to snap BTS stills on video shoots—but I ended up loving it so much it started coming with me everywhere: fly fishing, hunting, camping with my kids, and family trips.

Now I’m shooting with the RX1RIII, and it’s even better. Same compact body, but with a 61MP sensor, AI autofocus, USB-C, and all-new menus. It’s wild how something this small can produce images that rival my full-size pro cameras.

If you’ve never tried the RX1 series and want a compact camera with huge image quality, this one’s worth a serious look. I’ll be carrying it daily.
