It is a novel about a 17 year old Caucasian girl named Abigail Patton, from Alabama, in 1990 who is helping her parents clean out her great grandmother's house to prepare it for sale. Abigail takes on the task of cleaning out the attic. She stumbles upon a book of letters bound together with a picture of chains as the cover. She takes the book home with her that afternoon, away from her parents sights. She began reading the book that night. The first page of the book had the words 'Signatures of Our Slaves collected by Faye Patton' written in red ink.. Typed below were the words 'This book was a collection of undelivered letters of slaves to members of their families that they had been separated from by either slave trading or escaping to freedom, due to current laws. Bound by Darlene Patton'... Abigail's great grandmother.
