👑 Queen 399 👑 was first captured, collared, and tagged in 2001 when she was five years old. Researchers captured her twice more in 2002 and twice more in 2004 in July at Pilgrim Creek and in October, near Colter Bay. 399 had an amazing knack for somehow casting her collars.

In the spring of 2005, "399 was located again moving in the hinters rising above the eastern shores of Jackson Lake. In May, she shed her collar once more (from October 2004) and went off the air, but that summer, she was captured and collared yet again, the sixth time in five years."

"There is no grand genealogy for the bears of Greater Yellowstone... Not yet anyway; though with sophisticated DNA-mapping techniques being developed, it will happen someday soon.

399 was born in 1996. We will never know if she had siblings or who her parents were, though it's safe to say she is probably a lot like her mother, for grizzly mothers are the teachers in the game of survival of the fittest. More important than brawn" (physical strength) "for a grizzly matriarch is brains. Her IQ for interpreting the intentions of people has been off the charts."

399 is now the oldest grizzly, at 27 years old in the Yellowstone Ecosystem to bear cubs.
