It's Monday ... but did anyone catch any ling this weekend?

It’s Fish ID Friday! Today’s spotlight: cobia (often referred to as ling)

Juvenile cobia have a distinctive black lateral band from the snout to the base of the tail (pictured). As they reach the adult stage, they can be identified by their chocolate brown color.

Fun fact: Cobia are highly sought sport fish and are great to eat!

Cool info.

Our goal this time of year is to study bobwhite chick survival and movement. Chicks are vulnerable to cool or wet conditions until they gain body weight and better feathering. We are still waiting for chicks to hatch this year, but this cute photo of a male brooding 9-day-old chicks during June 2025 illustrates the necessity of brooding for keeping chicks alive. Chicks are comfortable at 100 degrees F during their first week of life. With only their heads poking out, the chicks are warm and toasty. We look forward to showing off this year’s chicks in future posts.
