7 Weeks After Lipedema Surgery: What Recovery Looks Like Now

This stage of recovery feels so different from those first few weeks.

I’m walking 6–7k steps most days, focusing on protein and hydration, using MLD, massage and my Lympha Press pumps, and—per my surgeon—compression is now optional. 🙌🏼

I still have healing to do. There are some firm areas in my inner legs, swelling can still come and go, and my body definitely reminds me when I overdo it.

But the biggest update?

I have no lipedema pain in my treated legs. 🥹

After living with Stage 3 lipedema, I don't take that sentence lightly.

My body isn't finished healing, and this was only surgery #1 of my treatment plan. But every week I'm getting a little more of my normal life back.

Beyond grateful. 💗

This is my personal recovery experience. Lipedema surgery and post-op protocols vary by patient and surgeon.

I'm so happy to feel like myself again!🙌

I'm so grateful to make it to 6 weeks post-op and be scheduled for Arms later this year.

Researchers in Salzburg looked inside lipedema fat cells and documented something that had never been shown in this tissue before.

In a healthy fat cell, the nucleus sits flattened against one large lipid droplet. Quiet. Out of the way.

In the lipedema samples, small separate droplets were pressing into the nucleus, passing all the way through it, and leaving a notch or a hole behind. The team captured each stage under electron microscopy.

They call these nuclei Lochkerne. German for "nucleus with a hole."
24% of fat cell nuclei in the lipedema tissue showed this. 3% in the control tissue.

And here is the line I keep returning to.

The frequency was unrelated to BMI and age.

If you have spent years being told your legs are a discipline problem, sit with that one. Something is happening at the level of the cell that has nothing to do with the number on your scale.

Now the honest part, because you deserve all of it. This was small. Nine women with lipedema, five controls.

Of the thousands of cell sections analyzed, 275 nuclei were clear enough to evaluate. The researchers name that as a real limitation themselves. They also cannot yet say what triggers this, or what it means for how the tissue behaves. The four stages I showed you are their reconstruction of the sequence, assembled from many still images, not a film of one cell.

This is not a treatment. It is not a cure. It is a piece of evidence, and it points somewhere the research world is now taking seriously.

Save this. It may be useful the next time someone tells you it is just weight.

Yesterday was my birthday. 🎂💗

And this year, more than anything, I find myself looking around and thinking…

Lord, thank You.

I’m grateful for another year of life, and maybe more aware than ever that every day really is a gift.

I’m grateful for my husband, who loves me, provides for us, and has walked beside me through a season that has required a whole lot from both of us.

I’m grateful for my children, my daughters-in-love, and those precious grandbabies who make life infinitely sweeter. 🥰

I’m grateful for family, friends, laughter, prayers, meals around a table, long conversations, ordinary days, and the people who show up.
I’m grateful for a body that is healing. For access to treatment. For good doctors and therapists. For progress I can see, and even more importantly, progress I can feel.

I’m grateful that after some pretty hard weeks, I'm getting pieces of normal life back again.

I’m grateful for a home I love and the security to give myself permission to heal without having to have everything figured out right now.

And I'm grateful for the things I'm still waiting for, because God has reminded me over and over that I don't have to know what comes next to trust the One who does.

At this point in life, birthdays feel a little less like counting years and a lot more like counting blessings.
And goodness... I have so many. 💗

Here’s to another trip around the sun; hopefully, with plenty of joy, purpose, generosity, family, faith, laughter, healing... and significantly fewer compression garments. 😂🙌

God has been so good to me.

Traveling gave me a little reminder: I still have Stage 3 lipedema. 😅

I’m about 5½ weeks out from 360° lipedema surgery on my legs, hips to ankles, and the difference in my legs has been incredible.

But today we spent about four hours in the car…and my arms and abdomen said, “Hi. Remember us?” 😂

They swelled.

Meanwhile, my treated legs handled the trip surprisingly well. One foot is still dealing with some post-op swelling, but overall, the difference between my treated and untreated areas really stood out to me today.

And that’s the strange part of doing this in stages.

I can already experience what treatment has changed in one part of my body while still living with the disease in the others.

I have three surgeries left, and now I’m waiting on insurance/payment and scheduling for the next one.

So tonight's glamorous hotel-room update is basically:

Progress is real.
Lipedema is still real.

And apparently my arms and abdomen wanted equal screen time. 😂💗

One surgery at a time.

LipedemaAwareness

I didn’t choose surgery because I wanted different legs. I chose it because I wanted a different quality of life.

Late-stage lipedema can mean pain, tenderness, heaviness, swelling, fibrosis, reduced mobility, and years of wondering why your body won’t respond the way everyone tells you it should.

SAFE lipo is one surgical approach used to remove abnormal lipedema tissue while aiming to protect important structures.

And the benefits can go far beyond appearance.

For me, the most exciting part isn’t seeing a smaller body.

It’s discovering what my body feels like underneath the disease. 💗
If you’re researching lipedema treatment, ask questions, find an experienced provider, and learn everything you can.

Knowledge changes everything.

One month. I can hardly believe the difference. 🥹💗

One month after 360° lipedema surgery from hip to ankle, I’m independent again. I’m showering on my own, getting more steps, wearing one layer of compression per my surgeon, and somehow I’m already in an XS.

But the size change isn’t what matters most.

My legs don’t hurt from lipedema.

I have more energy. I can move more easily. And for the first time I can remember, my weight is moving down while I’m actually eating and nourishing my body.

Recovery has absolutely not been a straight line, but today I can see how far I’ve come. 💗

If you’re considering lipedema surgery or you’re somewhere in recovery, ask me anything below. I’m happy to share my experience, knowing every body and recovery is different.

In every season, I keep coming back to this. 🤍

I don't always know the next step. I don't always understand what God is doing. But I can ask Him for wisdom, trust Him with what I can't see, and take the next step He's given me.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all…”
James 1:5 🤍

One day. One decision. One prayer at a time.

3½ weeks after lipedema surgery and I’m already in EXTRA SMALL compression. 🤯

Nobody warned me about this part. 😂

Recovery has definitely not been easy, but today I’m celebrating this little win.

My mind is honestly blown.

One day at a time. One size at a time. And apparently... several compression garments at a time. 😂🙌
