Animal shelters around the country are navigating shelter crowding following restrictions placed on transporting animals across state lines with the outbreak of the new world screwworm.

Kolby Monnig from Texas Humane Legislation Network, Liz Schultz from SPCA of Texas, along with two, 2-month old puppies, Apollo and Rocky, joined NTX Now host Ron Corning and managing producer Bekah Morr to learn more about current animal shelter conditions, how they're fighting for stronger animal protections in Texas, and how to distinguish a good seller from a bad one.

WFAA's senior meteorologist Jesse Hawila joined NTX Now for a literal temperature check.

He let us know when we're likely to finally see cooler weather, and the buzz around El Niño this year.

The last day to register is October 5th.

It's a good idea to check your voter registration, even if you've registered recently, because more than a million Texans have been placed on voter suspense lists.

That list has been in the headlines recently amid other accusations of voter suppression in the lead up to the November election.

A spokesperson with the Texas Secretary of State's office said this phenomenon isn't new, and the suspense list is intended to prevent folks from having their registration revoked.

Early voting runs from October 19-30th.

Election day is Tuesday, November 3rd.

You can check or update your registration at VoteTexas.gov.

In Carrollton, a heated debate is expected tonight as the city council decides whether to renew its contract with Flock Safety.

If approved, 82 AI-powered license plate readers will stay in operation. Those cameras work by capturing license plate information and giving police real-time alerts for vehicles linked to criminal activity.

But the technology isn't exactly popular.

Many North Texas cities have cancelled or scaled back contracts with Flock, and Gov. Greg Abbott even paused state funding for the cameras.

2026 has not been the year of the restaurant.

The news of restaurant closures has come at a steady pace, as the industry faces any number of challenges, including inflation.

And that makes a success story stand out that much more.

Will and Julie Salisbury have launched their namesake Italian pizzeria Salisbury's Pizza in Casa Linda Plaza in East Dallas, and it seems they've cracked the code for facing these challenging times.

They joined us live in studio to talk about how they're able to make their business work in this day and age.

Yesterday was the final day of the convention and we saw speeches from Vice President J-D Vance and President Trump as well as Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Senator Ted Cruz.

The latter used their speeches to target Islam, which isn't a new strategy for Texas politicians.

State leaders have used various tactics to stop Muslim events and developments from moving forward, many of which are here in North Texas.

Abbott also designated the state's largest Muslim civil rights organization a foreign terrorist organization last year.

In Cruz's speech, he specifically attacked 'Sharia law' -- a Muslim religious code that is not enforceable in the United States.

According to NPR, the influx of anti-Muslim bigotry has become increasingly common in GOP politics, manifesting everywhere from a "Sharia-free America" caucus in Congress to rhetoric on the campaign trail.

Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson spoke at the Republican midterm convention Thursday night, with his speech being scheduled not too far from President Donald Trump.

In his speech, he shared his story of leaving the Democratic party and praising Republican policies, and railed against socialism and Democratic policy.

Johnson described Dallas as the largest city in the country with a Republican Mayor, omitting the fact that when voters reelected him, he still publicly identified as a “lifelong Democrat.” Johnson became a Republican in 2023, less than five months after he was elected to a second term at helm of the Dallas City Council.
