A man told his future wife, during his PROPOSAL, that when he cheats she doesn’t cheat back… she just cries and asks why. And somehow everybody in the room thought that was romantic. 😭

Women, REQUIRE MORE. Love yourself enough to know that being chosen is not the prize if the person choosing you is comfortable hurting you. You teach people how to treat you by what you continuously accept. Sometimes self-love looks like walking away.

Stop being so afraid to lose a relationship that you lose yourself trying to keep it.

Black Americans were never “just making videos being cute.” There is culture in the way we speak, dress, dance, create, joke, style our hair, make music, build community and express ourselves. Black American culture does not become less valid just because it developed here in America, and acknowledging it does not mean dismissing Africa. We can respect African cultures without pretending Black Americans somehow came out of slavery with no distinct culture of our own. We have centuries of history on this land, and that history created a real, identifiable culture. Being “just Black” was never the problem. Believing Black American wasn’t enough was.

Fat Joe can contribute to hip-hop, grow up around Black people, and love Black culture. None of that makes him a Black man. And watching a room full of Black men go silent while he claimed Blackness and freely used the N-word said just as much as Fat Joe did.

The level of depravity society will tolerate from white women without ever attaching it to white womanhood as a whole needs to be studied. And with Bonnie Blue, it goes beyond simply being “treated as an individual.” She is allowed to continuously push into more disturbing territory, from sexualizing the idea of pregnancy to now incorporating a fake baby into the promotion of adult content, and somehow it all gets brushed off as shock value and entertainment. Meanwhile, Black women can shake their behinds and suddenly we need a national conversation about the “state of Black women.” THAT is the double standard I’m talking about.

The Lindsay Clancy case has me asking a question that goes beyond this one case: who gets to remain sympathetic after doing the unthinkable? Three children lost their lives, yet so much of the public conversation still centers her pain, her mental state, and her humanity. I want to talk about race, femininity, motherhood, and the level of grace society extends to certain women even when they are accused of causing unimaginable harm.

Keith Lee thanked God after a terrifying close call and somehow the internet turned that into “so you think God loves you more than the person who died?” 😭 That is NOT what that man said. You can think the post was poorly timed while still understanding that being grateful you’re alive does not mean you’re celebrating someone else’s death. People thank the universe, their ancestors, luck, manifestation and everything else, so why is thanking God suddenly where we draw the line? Sometimes gratitude is just gratitude. Everything does not need the worst possible interpretation.

At some point, the conversation around Jackie Aina stopped being about criticism and started feeling like a mission to humble her. And I think that says something much bigger about the way we respond to successful Black women who know they’re successful. You can dislike her, disagree with her, critique her… but why does it so often turn into wanting to see her knocked down a peg? 👀

A teacher said her students are coming to school acting like they’re on Baddies… and that sent me down a completely different rabbit hole. Because when I was growing up, we had an entire category of Black media that existed between cartoons and grown folks’ television. Shows where Black kids and teenagers got to be funny, awkward, smart, fashionable, dramatic, nerdy, popular… just KIDS. So what happened to that space?

Yes, parents have a responsibility to parent their children. Absolutely. But I think we’re kidding ourselves when we pretend the media children consume doesn’t help shape how they see themselves, what they aspire to, what they think is normal, and even what they think growing up is supposed to look like. And when the options go from children’s programming straight to adult reality TV and social media… I think that’s a conversation worth having.

This one is a little longer, but stay with me because I want to know what y’all think: What happened to Black media for kids and teens? And what did YOU grow up watching? 👀

I think people keep asking why Raven-Symoné’s wife seems to minimize her success, but I’m starting to think the more interesting conversation is why Raven appears so comfortable participating in it. Raven has made it clear that she doesn’t want her celebrity to be the center of her relationships, but there’s a difference between being humble and making yourself smaller.

And the insistence that That’s So Raven somehow wasn’t a “Black show” is part of the same conversation for me. Raven Baxter being Black shaped the character, the humor, the storylines and the cultural language of that show. Acknowledging race isn’t divisive. Sometimes pretending race had nothing to do with something is the actual erasure.

Black women’s hair has never been as simple as “you wear weave because you hate yourself.”

That argument ignores the history of Black hair discrimination, assimilation, lack of representation, and the fact that protections like the CROWN Act are still relatively recent.

You can encourage Black women to love our natural hair without publicly antagonizing or shaming us for wearing braids, wigs, weaves, locs, silk presses, or anything else we choose.

If you already understand WHY Black women have historically had such a complicated relationship with our hair, asking loaded questions just to watch Black women defend themselves isn’t advocacy. It’s humiliation disguised as conversation.

Black women’s hair should be our choice. Period.
