Deep within Virginia’s Great Dismal Swamp, history and legend drift together beneath the cypress trees.
In this episode of The Cryptid Catholic Show, Austin explores the mysterious white canoe of Lake Drummond, the graveyard said to appear and vanish without warning, strange lights, phantom footsteps, and the haunting stories that have followed travelers through the swamp for generations. But the Great Dismal Swamp is more than a place of ghost stories. It was also a refuge for freedom seekers and Maroon communities who built lives beyond the reach of slavery, carrying their faith, families, sorrow, and hope into one of the most unforgiving landscapes in America. Are the swamp’s legends merely fog, wildlife, and frightened imaginations, or does the land still remember those who history forgot?

Keep your lantern lit, your rosary close, and whatever you do… do not follow the white canoe.

Introducing our Mascot, and official brand ambassador, Brother Lumen!

A humble little monk with a lantern in hand and courage in his heart, Brother Lumen wanders the shadowy byways of legend, folklore, and the unexplained. Though small in stature and sometimes a bit wary of what may be lurking in the dark, he presses on with faith, carrying the light where others fear to tread.

He serves as the guide and companion of The Cryptid Catholic, helping us explore strange tales, haunted places, mysterious creatures, and forgotten traditions, always with the light of Christ shining against the darkness. Wherever the path grows dim, Brother Lumen lifts his lantern a little higher and reminds us:
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Looks Unassuming and Inviting huh? Just over the right bank is the sprawling Chesapeake Bay. It might be a nice place to take a walk and enjoy the maritime nature....at least during the day....

Folks have talked about this stretch of trees for decades and the stories that come from beneath the canopy are the stuff of nightmares!

Join us this weekend for a leisurely stroll through the OLD HOUSE WOODS, perhaps the most haunted forest in Virginia 🌳🚢🏴‍☠️💀⛈️
