In recognition of Gun Violence Awareness Month in June, the Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice Speak team will be hosting a national conversation about healing, community, and turning pain into power.

On June 2, they'll be hosting "The Other Side of Gun Violence: Black Men Who Survived and Now Lead." It's a free webinar that centers the voices of Black men who have survived gun violence and are now leading their communities.

The webinar features four panelists who are leading healing and safety movements at the community and national level:

- Aswad Thomas, Vice President Just Safe, National Director Crime Survivors Speak
- Dominique Travis-Bey, Founder OneStepAtATimePH
- Cameron Bertrand, CEO Gun Violence Intervention & Prevention Outreach & Resource Center
- Stedman Bailey, Former NFL Player, Entrepreneur, & Motivational Speaker

"Too often, conversations about gun violence center on loss, the lives taken, and the grief carried by families and communities," the group said in a press release. "While we know those stories are critically important, there is another narrative that is too often overlooked: the lived experiences of those who survived."

They hope to see you virtually on June 2 and 7 PM ET.

After asking the City of Danville repeatedly to build and implement an official gun violence prevention plan with no success, residents are uniting to do it themselves.

On Thursday, members of the Vermilion County Gun Violence Prevention Committee gathered at Danville Public Library to begin discussions on building the plan.

Mary Catherine Roberson, a local activist who helped build Champaign's gun violence blueprint which led to a 50% reduction in gun violence after its 2022 implementation, shared a presentation at the meeting all about how different cities across the nation have built and implemented such blueprints.

The blueprint model addresses root causes, like concentrated poverty, lack of opportunity, underfunded public services, and eroded trust in law enforcement, through hospital-based intervention, street outreach workers, community mobilization, and more.

Champaign budgeted $2.59 million for this work in 2025, while the City of Danville has zero dollars dedicated to violence prevention in its current budget.
