Ahead of many orphan trains, handbills announced that children were coming and homes were wanted. At the station, the children were lined up on platforms or stages while local families walked the line, and in some accounts felt their arms or checked their teeth, and chose. Some families hoped to adopt, while others wanted help on the farm. Screening and follow-up were meant to happen through local committees and agent visits, but varied by agency and were not always enforced. Part 2 of 4.
