⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE ⚠️

🟡 The stage has been set for isolated to scattered thunderstorms to develop in eastern Iowa and western Illinois as we head into the evening hours. Although significant severe weather is no longer expected, storms will still be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, hail and possibly brief tornadoes.

⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE ⚠️

👉 Widespread rain, storms and cloud cover this morning will help subdue the overall threat for severe weather in the local QCA region. However, there may still be enough energy to spawn a few strong to severe storms later this afternoon into the evening before cold front moves eastward through the region.

👉 Meanwhile, further to our south, the threat for significant to intense severe storms remains intact, including the St. Louis Metro area, where destructive wind, large hail and tornadoes are possible later today into tonight.

👉 A few strong to severe thunderstorms remain possible in the QCA region Monday afternoon into the evening, but the threat for significant severe weather has shifted well to our south.

🟨 LEVEL 2 THREAT: After uncertainty plagued the forecast for past several days, model guidance has come into alignment with observations showing morning rain, storms and cloud cover are stabilizing the atmosphere and will leave little time for recovery before cold front advances east into the QCA later today. Nonetheless, there is still expected to be a modest recovery, allowing additional storms to develop in the afternoon and early evening carrying risk for all severe hazards, as they advance east from Iowa into Illinois, including damaging wind gusts, hail and possibly a brief tornado before storms clear to our east by 10pm or sooner.

⚠️ LEVEL 3 SEVERE WEATHER THREAT MONDAY INTO MONDAY NIGHT

🟠 OVERALL THREAT: Level 3 of 5
🔴 PEAK POTENTIAL: Level 4 of 5

👉 Multiple rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms are expected late Sunday night thru Monday with severe weather most likely to occur in the afternoon and evening when potentially significant to intense severe storms are anticipated, especially south of I-80, but the threat exists areawide.

🟧 LEVEL 3 THREAT: There remains considerable uncertainty regarding timing, placement and intensity of the strongest storms. Nonetheless, thunderstorms are likely areawide with all storms capable of becoming severe, some of which could be intense and capable of producing strong tornadoes and destructive wind and hail. Furthermore, storms will produce heavy rainfall leading to the potential for flash flooding in some areas. As of now, we generally expect showers and storms from late Sunday night, possibly persisting thru midday Monday, followed redeveloping storms later in the afternoon and evening advancing eastward into Illinois before clearing the QCA region to our east by around 10pm. Model guidance currently suggests the most favorable environment for significant severe weather could be mostly confined to areas south of the I-80 corridor. This is where an upgrade to Level 4 may be needed. However, there is still no overwhelming consensus, thus, we will maintain Level 3 areawide, but this is subject to change.

🟧 MONDAY INTO MONDAY NIGHT:
A robust storm system traverses the region bringing another round of thunderstorms to the QCA with an increasing risk for all severe hazards, including damaging wind, large hail, tornadoes and flash flooding. The entire area will face threat of severe weather, but details such as precise timing, placement and intensity of the strongest storms will become more refined over the next 24 to 48 hours. As of now, model guidance suggests showers and storms may be ongoing Monday morning and could persist thru midday, which could sap energy needed for robust severe weather later in the afternoon and evening. Monitor the forecast closely and stay tuned in for more updates.

👉 A few strong to severe thunderstorms are possible along and west of the MS River late Thursday afternoon into the evening before a line of strong to severe storms advance eastward through the immediate QCA by late evening into the overnight hours.

🟨 LEVEL 2 THREAT: Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms, capable of producing damaging wind gusts, hail, and maybe a brief tornado, are expected to develop in eastern Iowa by around 4pm, and generally move north / northeastward into Wisconsin and far NW Illinois before a more organized line of storms to our west advances into eastern Iowa after 10pm carrying a risk for damaging wind gusts and possibly a couple tornadoes, mainly west of MS river before storms gradually weaken heading into Illinois overnight into early Friday morning.

❕️SEVERE WEATHER EVENT REVIEW❕️

🗓️ Friday, April 17, 2026
✍️ Level 3 Severe Weather Event
▫️ Large Hail & Tornadoes

🔘 Numerous severe storms swept through the QCA on the afternoon and evening of Friday April 17, bringing widespread wind gusts in excess of 60 to 80 mph, along with large hail and several tornadoes, of which caused significant property damage in many communities.

🔘 The most significant damage in the local QCA region occurred in Lena, where many homes and outbuildings were damaged, trees uprooted, and power lines downed by an EF2 tornado.

🌪️ More than a dozen tornadoes touched down in the local region, most of which reached at least EF1 intensity, with two rated an EF2; one in Stephenson County, and another that touched down in eastern Tazewell County.

🌪️ Two additional EF2 tornadoes touched down in the Table Grove area impacting McDonough and Fulton Counties.

🔘 Ahead of the main line of storms, a supercell travelled north across west central Illinois, and produced damaging wind and two inch hail where the wind driven hail broke windows and damaged siding on several homes.

🔘 Down in central Illinois, preliminary reports show at least two dozen tornadoes moved traveled across areas mainly north of I-72, with the greatest structural damage reported near Bloomington-Normal in McLean County.

🏥 No casualties have been reported.

🟡 END OF WEEK RAIN & STORMS 🟡

👉 Showers and thunderstorms are possible, from west to east, late Thursday into early Friday with a low threat for severe weather. Storms may produce hail, gusty wind and heavy rain.

👉 Rain and storm chances return late Sunday into early next week. As of now, the threat for severe weather in the QCA region is low, but will be need to be monitored for developments.
