SHE WORE A TOY BADGE AT FIVE—NOW SHE’S LEADING THE FORCE I remember the cheap plastic badge digging into my chest and my oversized blue costume drooping past my knees. I was five. It was Halloween. And I knew—with the kind of certainty only kids can have—that I was going to be a cop one day. Nobody took me seriously, of course. My Aunt Cici laughed and said, ā€œAww, how cute. Next year she’ll want to be a princess.ā€ But I didn’t change my mind. Not when the other girls traded their plastic batons for wands. Not when I got older and the guys in high school said I was ā€œtoo softā€ for that kind of work. I worked night shifts at a diner to pay my way through the academy. Some nights I’d walk home dead tired, with my shoes soaked from snowmelt and my hands trembling from pouring coffee for ten hours. I kept my badge from that Halloween on my mirror—just to remind myself why I was doing it. The first time I made a traffic stop alone, my heart was pounding so hard I thought the driver could hear it. But I did it. Then came tougher calls. Domestic disputes. Overdoses. One time, a hostage situation that still wakes me up at 3 a.m. with sweat down my back. But I kept going. I never quit. Last week, I got promoted to sergeant. I walked into my new office and found a little box sitting on my desk. Inside was that same Halloween badge—bent, faded, but still intact. My dad had saved it all these years. I looked at it, and for the first time, I cried. Not because I’d made it. But because somewhere, that five-year-old girl knew she would. And now… the little girls in my neighborhood ask to take pictures with me when I’m in uniform. But here’s the part I’ve never told anyone—not even my partner. The night before my final academy test… I almost walked away. ??

HE SAID I WASN’T ā€œFATHER MATERIALā€ā€”BUT I RAISED THOSE KIDS FROM DAY ONE When my sister, Maelis, went into labor, I was halfway across the state at a motorcycle rally. She’d begged me not to cancel, swore she’d be fine, said she had time. She didn’t. Three beautiful babies came into this world—and she didn’t make it out. I remember holding those tiny, squirmy bodies in the NICU, still smelling like gasoline and leather. No plan. No clue. But I looked at them—Roux, Brin, and Callum—and I just knew. I wasn’t going anywhere. I traded late-night rides for late-night feedings. My crew at the shop covered for me so I could make preschool pickup. I learned how to braid Brin’s hair, how to calm Roux’s meltdowns, how to get Callum to eat something besides buttered pasta. I stopped riding long distance. Sold two bikes. Built bunk beds with my bare hands. Five years. Five birthdays. Five winters of flu season and stomach bugs. I wasn’t perfect, but I showed up. Every single day. And then, out of nowhere—he showed up. Biological father. Not on the birth certificates. Never visited Maelis once during her pregnancy. According to her, he’d said triplets didn’t fit his lifestyle. But now? He wanted them. He didn’t come alone. He brought a social worker named Marianne who took one look at my oil-stained coveralls and said I was \"not the long-term developmental environment these children require.ā€ I couldn’t believe it. Marianne toured our small but clean home. Saw the art the kids made on the fridge. Saw their bikes in the yard. The tiny boots lined up by the door. She smiled politely. Made notes. I saw her eyes linger a little too long on the tattoo on my neck. The worst part? The kids didn’t understand. Roux hid behind me. Callum cried. Brin asked, ā€œIs that man going to be our new daddy?ā€ I said, ā€œNo one’s taking you. Not without a fight.ā€ And now… the hearing’s next week. I’ve got a lawyer. A good one. Expensive as hell, but worth it. My shop\'s barely breaking even because I’m juggling everything, but I’d sell my last wrench to keep them. I don’t know what the judge will decide.šŸ‘‡
