Theme: Relationships are tools to show us ourselves By: Lindsay Haralson June 17th, 2025 If you’re anything like me —former high school English teacher, lifelong perfectionist, and undiagnosed, but likely neurodivergent person —you appreciate a good theme. A theme gives you something to ground things in, a nice and neat thread to pull through things to give them meaning and organize them into some existing schema to better navigate the world....

What is to be said of a brutalist’s dream for shaping? an obstinate onlooker sucks on dip to pass the time As towers rise into the sky From his broken memories and obsolete dreams. Someone has to believe, for a faith to be so, And you were standing there, owning the world In a gaze and a whisper of greatness,...

I’ve been fascinated lately with what it truly means to let something go…I don’t think it’s tossing the thing out into some large expansive body of water, real or symbolic, to never be seen or talked or heard of again. I think the actual letting go happens or is constantly happening when the thing is right there in your chest, threatening to steal your last breath, and then you take that perceived last breath and another one after....

I have never really written about leaving the classroom and what I left behind to do so- what has refused to let me go even after 3 years. I have been thinking for a bit that maybe it’s because it didn’t mean as much to me as I thought, (and that carries its own bewildering presence, if you have been a teacher and are no longer, you can maybe empathize) since I haven’t written about it, but I think the actual truth is that it means too much....

I’ve never met a writer who wasn’t a reader, who didn’t see some reflection of the writer they wanted to be in the words they were reading. For myself, I think I’m always chasing that feeling- the wonder that people can pull something out of me by stringing words together. Can make me see something. Feel something. Question. Know me and what I am thinking on the very interior part of myself that I don’t show to just everybody....

My dearest, The sun brazenly warms the windshield as I, cigarette in hand of course, lean over the dashboard, my makeshift desk, in this unexpected writers corner of the world. The sunlight pours in and over my papers as if it wants to awaken these words; bring them to life as I have tried to do so many times in the small space of time that we shared. You see, I have gotten myself figured out....
