This drag racing LEGEND was on display at the Triple Crown of Rodding in Nashville, Tennessee over the weekend. This 1940 Willys is an all steel gasser that ran at York US30, Vargo Dragway and other Pennsylvania drag strips in the 1960's. The car ran a 301ci small block Chevy with mechanical fuel injection, and with the relatively heavy body (no fiberglass or lexan), it placed the car in the D/Gas category.
Originally campaigned by Louie Lang of Quakertown, PA, this car was a showpiece in its day. The steel front fenders and hood were made into a one piece unit and the seams were leaded smooth. The car had diamond stitched upholstery with buttons, and beautiful details throughout, and it still has many of those features today. The current owners, Mark and Pamela DeWalt spent four years restoring the car, re-using many of the original parts. The Moon hydraulic throttle pedal, the interior panels, the engine mounts and many other pieces are original to the car and restored to perfection.
The coolest thing about this car is that Mark bought it at the age of 14 and has owned it 50 years. At the time of purchase, it was just a used up old race car, but today, it's truly a piece of Northeastern drag racing history.
