A functional VR system, though I'm still hesitant about having a toaster on everyone's face when using this.

Support the joint, save the shoulder!

If your stroke patient's affected arm is just resting on a standard wheelchair armpad, or worse, hanging down by the wheel, you are actively contributing to a painful shoulder subluxation.

Supporting the shoulder with a lap-tray or arm trough can have major effects on a patients quality of life!

A custom wheelchair or power chair through insurance can be even more beneficial with the adjustable height of the armrests!

A standard armrest is just for resting. A flaccid arm needs rescuing. Upgrade the hardware and protect the joint.

This could save patients and insurance companies thousands in medical procedures and Ohio has been the biggest beneficiary over the past couple of years.

This is an image from a pressure mapping session comparing an off-the-shelf cushion to the smart alternating air cushion called the Kalogon Orbiter Med.

It uses machine learning to adjust with the patient and automatically offload high pressure areas.

Increased blood flow means improved healing - a pressure wound's biggest enemy.

I've provided dozens of patients with this new technology here in long-term care facilities with some excellent results!

More healing, less wounds, less hospitalizations.

As an OT or PT, it's likely you see patients with these postures daily.

But these postures can lead to decreased environmental interaction, decreased independence, decreased endurance throughout the day.

Some of this may be prevented and corrected with exercises and activities but custom seating for patients is an extra supplement to therapy to improve patient outcomes - especially for those patients with fixed positions.

Custom seating can provide that stability to allow for more efficient therapeutic interventions and more independence for the patient throughout the day!

If you see a patient that presents with something like these below, reach out and let me know!

Things are moving forward (and not in a good way)

Wheelchair users used to be at more risk for this than the general population but...I think that might have changed.

One of the things to be aware of as an OT/PT when it comes to wheelchair users, is the frequent use of the front of their bodies and the lack of use of the back.

It's something to be aware of when a patient is consistently utilizing a wheelchair for mobility (and when you're texting the group chat).

Occupational and Physical therapists are WAY more important than me when it comes to wheelchairs.

I only know what I see in an hour of a patient's time, but most of the time, therapists know their patients over multiple sessions.

It's a collaborative effort...because I don't know it all!

The wheelchair backrest from the brains of rocket scientists (seriously!)

This Kalogon Bondar is one of my favorite backrests to use when it comes to custom seating.

Highly customizable shape, a launch pad to see exactly what I'm making my patients, and of course, a tactical baggie.

Fixing those standard wheelchair brakes might be easier than you think
