Hey everyone! Thomas here- It's been several months since the last episode of Lines On A Page (whoops!), and I figured I would do a chill drawing stream while I work on holiday cards and show what I've been up to. So, pull up some chair, grab your holiday beverage of choice, and let's hang out!

In light of the Frieren trend that's been circulating the last few days, it's nice to see people branch out & show their approaches to drawing faces. When starting to look at understanding the building blocks of drawing humans in art, more times than none people will be directed towards the Loomis Method (created by Andrew Loomis).

If we're looking at just the head, Loomis boils the head down to two basic shapes: a ball & a cup. However, those who like doing very cartoony artwork (like Bill Watterson, Chris Bachalo, Jeff Smith, etc), this method does and doesn't work depending on the angle of the head in that style. And it's because of one thing: they're using a simple x/y axis, so specific things like big anime eyes or round noses tend to get warped under specific perspectives & angles.

While I can say that I've sorta broken away from the Loomis Method, I still believe in the utility of the x/y axis when doing the average human face in a "house style" comic situation. However, I choose a different overall basic shape instead of 2 shapes sitting on top of each other and I use 3 x axes against the 1 y axis. Pic below is a quick tutorial on how I piece it all together.
