for an *imperfect* plastic free life

we might not be able to eliminate plastic from our lives completely…

but that doesn’t mean we can’t try with the habits we have control over.

countless studies show how harmful plastic is to human health, the environment, and all living beings.

creating plastic is harmful both at its extraction as petroleum (fossil fuels)

and just as detrimental at its “disposal” where plastic doesn’t actually disappear, just gets smaller and smaller…

plaguing whatever environment it’s in by leaching toxins.

therefore, we can try our best in our own homes to limit how much plastic we bring in

AND we hold polluters accountable by boycotting, pushing for regulations, and being vocal about what we want changed.

it’s an imperfect solution and action to this plastic crisis that is most definitely not your fault and not mine.

but it’s the world we’re in, so let’s focus on what we can and continue speaking out!

which coral fact is your favorite?

coral reef awareness week highlights how important coral reefs are to all life on Earth!

we NEED coral reefs, and after diving for over 20 years in FL, I’ve seen how much they’ve changed…

if you want to help protect coral reefs and ensure they exist for the coming generations, I would do this:

‼️ limit your plastic use.

start becoming aware of how much plastic you use, and see which habits contribute to consistent single-use plastic usage (water bottles, to-go coffee or beverages, etc.)

try bringing reusables instead (bring your water bottle, tote bags, stainless steel straw, food storage, etc.)

refuse as much as possible (straws, plastic utensils, takeout, bags, produce bags, etc.)

support legislation that limits the production/use of single-use plastics

you may even inspire change around you, just by living these behaviors!

keep the corals in mind 🪸

not every swap is an easy one!

since I’m a slow swapper, I really think about my new purchases/swaps before I make them.

sometimes that leads me to overthinking…

“what if it’s inconvenient?”

“what if I don’t like the swap?”

it’s totally understandable to be hesitant with new swaps, in fact, I encourage you to be.

the last thing I want you to do is go out and buy a ton a things just to “be more sustainable”

because buying a ton of stuff is inherently NOT sustainable.

so let this be some reassurance to you…

it’s okay to slowly swap.

think about why you’re making the swap, make sure you have enough time to think about it, and start before you NEED something so you can make the best choice.

I’ve yet to regret a swap *because* I put so much thought into the decision.

would you try any of these swaps for plastic free july?

beach cleanup 🤝 reef cleanup

I participated in not one but TWO sponsored events this past weekend and I’m still stoked about it!

it was a fun weekend filled with conservation and cleanups to protect what we love - the environment 🪸🌊🏝️

first event was a cleanup with where after the cleanup, a rehabilitated adolescent hawk was released back into the wild 🥹

we also did trivia and I won a Rock The Ocean shirt for answering a composting question since was there as well!

second event was this past Sunday with where I participated in a tri-county cleanup

five dive boats in Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties.

weekends with back-to-back conservation events really fill up my cup!!

should I start posting about local cleanups and conservation related events so we can attend together??
