Monday Master Gardener advice on deer. Q: I live in town and the deer make beds out of my flower beds and in the yard! A: There’s really no guaranteed way to keep them away. You can try a number of things though, a tall fence, motion-activated sprinklers or deer repellents from your local garden center.

Could you provide suggestions? – North Carolina A: Good plants for autumn blooms include flowering cabbage, bacopa, annual lobelia, chrysanthemum, aster, Japanese anemone, turtlehead, and guara. For color from foliage, try Japanese maples, smokebush (seen in post), ornamental grasses, or amsonia. For colorful berries, grow arrowwood viburnum, winterberry, and beautyberry.
