Last week I shot some environmental portraits with Coco, a sweet Chihuahua, at Scenic Route Bakery in Des Moines. It was storming that morning so the atmosphere was a little unsettling for her, but once the familiar smells of pain au chocolat and doggy treats found her nose she began to settle down and we made some pretty fun portraits. August 26 is National Dog Day, and if you're a dog lover in central Iowa (or don't mind a drive to Des Moines), I am holding a Dog Days mini photo session at my home studio Aug. 25-26 (because dogs should have more than one day) from 9-6. Sessions are scheduled for 20 minutes. I am also very excited to be teaming up with Auntie Abby’s Professional Pet Sitting Service, LLC who is generously providing doggie grab bags to take following your session! (thank you, Abby! 🐾)

If you're a client of Auntie Abby's, she'll have details later on a special client rate. If you're not a client, you should be! I can personally attest to the love and professionalism she and her staff show your pet.

My new website is still in its baby stage and some tweaks and changes will be made over the course of the next few days, but I am happy to finally launch www.houlgravephoto.com

My career in media has been a diverse one, and I've never appreciated my experience as a writer and visual storyteller more than I do today!

It didn't take long for this sweet girl to become comfortable around the camera and lights. I suppose that's the case when your human is THE Rodney White. I knew I wanted a sunset setting near a source of water to show off those beautiful markings and dazzling brown eyes so we packed up the gear and brought her out to Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines.

Two years ago I was driving east on I80 towards Iowa City when conditions became favorable for destructive weather. I took an exit and headed south, hoping to maybe see something. I found a spot on a gravel road and squinted at a towering thunderhead in the distance. It appeared to have some rotation, and about the time the weather alert sounded on my phone I saw the giant cone. I stayed for a bit, feeling I was still a safe distance from this large tornado. I could hear it, a whisper at first, then louder as it closed the distance, into a low roar, the sound a cat makes when it's upset. Other than that, it was strangely calm everywhere around me. The long grass in the ditches swayed gently, the red-winged blackbirds were warning me with song, cows mooing from a farm nearby. It was oddly tranquil. Too tranquil, because I was lulled into a false sense of security and the tornado was closing that gap between us very quickly. I finally packed up and tossed my cameras back into the Kia and sped away, jacked up on adrenaline. I don't think I've ever driven so fast on a gravel road as I did that day. Before the tornado got too close I grabbed a couple photos with my iPhone. This happened to be one of my favorites from that afternoon.

Watching her steady improvements has been so much fun! Getting her to agree to impromptu photo shoots is another story. I tell her that these photos are for her, not so much for me. One day she will love to see how amazing she was as a young girl. Take lots of pictures of your kids. Do it for them. 💕

The 2024-25 Iowa high school boys basketball tournament is under way in Des Moines. Jaidyn C**n, the junior phenom from Spirit Lake, entertained fans with multiple dunks but ADM-Adel left with the victory on Monday at Wells Fargo Arena. On assignment for the The Des Moines Register
