Kevin Saunderson: Dance Scene Is Still Failing Black Artists
In an interview with Billboard, electronic music pioneer Kevin Saunderson discusses racial disparity in the U.S. dance scene.

Way back on December 14, 1998, UR was in London for a press conference, prior to Interstellar Fugitives shows in the UK. Colin Dale put together a great summary of the talk, and this quote from the collective remains key. In the midst of chaos, it's important to remember that the struggle and importance of creating is nothing new.
“We are who we are man. What can we make but black music? Our funk comes from the environment that we live in, it's about growing up with someone's foot on your neck 24 hours a day, people trying to hold you back as people have tried to hold us back as a people. So I mean we speak through the music that we make, the soul that comes from our experience. The soul comes from being people that have been held back, knocked down, beat down. But we've managed to stand up and straighten up our backs, and speak through this music that we're making. So I mean, when we get out of our environment, hell yeah, the music's gonna change! I mean, the thing with UR is that it's a group, but it's a record label too. People are employed, so if we leave man, what are we gonna do with the people that are employed? You understand? We gotta stay there and show the next partners.”
