Detroit is preparing to open a museum dedicated to one of the city’s greatest cultural contributions to the world: techno music.

The upcoming MODEM Detroit will preserve and celebrate Detroit’s role in shaping techno and hip-hop, two genres that grew from local neighborhoods, basements, studios, and underground spaces before influencing music scenes across the globe.

The museum will feature recordings, photographs, artifacts, and stories connected to the DJs, producers, and artists who helped create Detroit’s electronic music identity during the 1970s and 1980s.

For decades, Detroit techno has carried the sound of the city itself, blending funk, electronic experimentation, soul, and futurism into something entirely new. What started locally became a worldwide movement that still draws people to Detroit every year for events like Movement Festival at Hart Plaza.

Detroit showed up.

What began as a day of conversations became something much bigger — a gathering of chefs, founders, policymakers, entrepreneurs, investors, media professionals, and community leaders all focused on the future of food in Detroit.

Throughout the day, discussions explored food access, entrepreneurship, hospitality, policy, preservation, sourcing, and sustainability. And across every panel and conversation, a common theme emerged: Detroit’s food ecosystem is being shaped by people who are deeply invested in building a stronger, more connected future.

Across Detroit, and across Michigan more broadly, the cost of food has become a constant point of pressure, shaping how people shop, what they buy and, for many, whether they have enough.

“For a lot of people, everything just feels more expensive right now, including groceries,” says State Senator Stephanie Chang, who represents Michigan’s 3rd Senate District and who spoke at the 2026 Business of Food Summit. “We hear that from residents all the time.”

At the state level, those priorities are actively being shaped through the budget process.

One of Detroit’s most historic gathering spaces has now been named among America’s “11 Most Endangered Historic Places.”

The clubhouse of the Detroit Association of Women’s Club (Detroit Association of Women's Clubs, Inc), has served as a center for activism, community organizing, education, and civic leadership for more than a century.

Founded during the Black uplift movement in the early 1900s, the organization played an important role in supporting social programs, civil rights efforts, and opportunities for Black women and families across Detroit.

But after severe pipe damage forced the building to close in 2024, leaders say restoring the landmark has become increasingly urgent. The designation is now bringing national attention to the need to preserve not just the structure itself, but the history connected to it.

For Detroit, buildings like this represent more than architecture. They hold stories of organizing, resilience, leadership, and community work that shaped generations across the city.

Spirit Plaza (Detroit Parks & Recreation) is officially reopening in downtown Detroit on June 6 after a $2.9 million renovation that adds new permanent features, expanded public space, and more family-friendly amenities to one of the city’s busiest gathering areas.

Located along Woodward Avenue between Larned and Jefferson, just steps from the Spirit of Detroit statue, the plaza now includes a covered performance stage, a larger play area, wheelchair-accessible equipment, swings, additional shade seating, turf lawn space, and upgraded gathering areas designed for year-round community use.

Since first launching in 2017, Spirit Plaza has evolved into one of downtown Detroit’s main public event spaces, hosting everything from concerts and fitness programming to food trucks, dance nights, and large community gatherings.

The reopening celebration on June 6 will feature DJs, fitness classes, food trucks, games, inflatables, and family activities throughout the day as the city kicks off another summer season downtown.

The Detroit Zoo newly opened Fred and Barbara Erb Discovery Trails is a 7-acre immersive expansion designed to bring visitors closer to animals, nature, and hands-on exploration in ways the zoo hasn’t offered before.

The $49 million project includes a 14-foot-high canopy trail with raised walkways and bridges, interactive stingray and bamboo shark experiences, sensory nature trails, a goat barn, alpacas, burrowing owls, prairie dogs, giant anteaters, and new gathering spaces spread throughout the area.

Zoo officials say the project is expected to significantly increase attendance, memberships, school field trips, and overall economic impact for the region while also expanding the zoo’s long-term education mission.

For generations of Detroit-area families, the zoo has already been part of childhood memories and summer traditions. Discovery Trails is designed to become part of that next chapter.
