Join for a conversation with Matt Birkhold on the components of visionary organizing!

Matt is a longtime friend and comrade of the Boggs Center and a Co-Director of Visionary Organizing Lab (VOL), an organization that supports people to experiment with creating self-reliant communities and dignity-affirming organizations.

Matt will share a presentation called “Lessons from Detroit: The Six Components of Visionary Organizing.” He will show us how VOL’s work has drawn from time spent with Boggs Center comrades and highlight elements of our work that have informed what VOL calls ‘the components of visionary organizing.’

When: Tuesday, January 13 9:00 am
Where: The Spirit of Detroit at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building

DETROIT - In the wake of the brutal murder of legal observer Renee Nicole Good, grassroots
activists, legal advocates, and Detroit elected officials are gathering to speak out against I.C.E
and the reign of terror they are inflicting on our communities. We are calling upon all people of
conscience to denounce and resist the escalation of state violence perpetrated by the Trump administration at home and abroad.

Good’s death was the result of a viciously racist and xenophobic campaign against the Somali
immigrant population of Minneapolis. Several Black leaders are worried about what this
escalation of state repression means for the majority-Black residents of Detroit, its immigrant population, and those who stand with them.

We believe the time to act is now! Municipal
leadership at the highest level in Detroit should actively call for an end to ICE activities such has been done in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Portland. Speakers will be calling on other leaders in faith, civic, community, and labor, and most importantly Detroiters, to join us in speaking out against Trump, ICE, and state violence against oppressed and working
class people across the country.

Speakers at the press conference will be speaking about how Trump’s ramp up of ICE and his aggressive foreign policy against Latin America and Venezuela affect Detroiters and why we
need the Mayor and city council to oppose ICE’s presence in Detroit.

Trump says get back, we say fight back! The 23rd annual MLK day rally and community meal is one week away! It is important in times like these for us to come together to share a meal and strategize about how we can keep each other safe and respond to what collectively happening to all of us around the country.

If you haven’t gotten a copy of the new addition of Riverwise about AI and surveillance we will have plenty of them on hand so you can scoop one up!

At least a thousand people gathered at Hart Plaza this afternoon to demand with in an end to terror, violence, and occupation in US cities.

After a long rally in the rain and snow, they marched down Woodward and shut down Campus Martius.

Hundreds of people gathered at the corner of Clark and Vernor in Southwest this evening to protest violence, terror, and occupation.

There were folks with candles and a vigil set up with pictures of people that have been murdered by ICE.

You could hear people chanting for miles “no ICE no K*K no fascist USA!”

After about an hour hundreds of people took Vernor and shut it down.
