little peej finally got her camping adventure šŸ•ļø

of course i’m a grill master, but i finally learned how to make a fire out of firewood, i kayaked, took a hike and learned about poison ivy, mushrooms and chicken of the woods… and i also learned how to set up a tent and how to shoot a real slingshot.

i had such a great time camping this weekend at waterloo state park. thank you to .pack for getting us outside and feeling more confident in the outdoor space!

ok now, who wants to go camping? i got us on the tent and the food for sure!

hiking the devil’s bridge trail to get to the devil’s bridge…

we didn’t actually make it to the bridge, we stopped about half a mile up on this canyon that we nicknamed the devil’s toenail because we didn’t have another 15 min incline left in us.

the view was still incredible and this was so worth the 3 hours of hell we hiked.

Day 3 started off a little slower. Physically, my body was exhausted and I got off to a late start. The anti-malaria medication upsets my stomach in the morning, so I can’t eat heavy or traditional breakfast which consists of tomatoes and baked beans. And really, I was just tired. But I still pushed through at a slower pace and finished up 2 hours earlier so that I could rest up for tomorrow.

We were still really productive today in the short amount of time. I got a copy of their constitution and we explored the 4 core values of the organization, teamwork, transparency, shared responsibility and efficiency. Many were not aware those were the core values, so we explored each of those concepts and how they can enhance the organization.

We did a couple of teamwork activities, as I found it difficult to communicate and explain team builders with a translator and through a lens of another’s culture. For example, in the U.S. or American culture, we can use different materials or we will physically touch one another for team builders. However resources are limited and cannot be wasted, and holding hands, standing in tight spaces etc are not the best activities when they can’t be well explained. I did have one of my favorite activities that went over well.

Today was the day we tackled the communication issue and I took a change with the age old favorite ā€œTelephoneā€ since one of the main ways they communicate is word of mouth, as many do not have access to a phone. The phrase was ā€œOur soccer team is #1ā€ and at the end of the circle, the message was inaudible🤣. They realized that’s probably how messages are being conveyed to those without phones by the time they receive it.

We created a 2-tier communities plan that started with creating a list of those who have phone and reception, those who have text capabilities and those who do not. Instead of assuming ā€œsomeoneā€ will go to their door and relay the message, we identified who could be those liaisons to connect with those without phone access. We are also working to see how we can photo copy and distribute information more widely instead of area leaders making 10 different phone calls and relaying the message those times.

We then ended exploring conflict and how it is both inevitable and necessary for growth in organizations.

We finished early but it was still impactful in 4 hours.

Resting up and getting ready for tomorrow.

Still blessed. Still grateful af.

Day 2 on assignment was focused on building on leadership principles and exploring different leadership styles. Lots on unlearning took place as we discovered leadership is not associated with a title or a position, and there’s more than 1 way to lead. The women were able to identify their leadership style and how they aspire to show up in the organization. We also explored servant leadership, principles of governance, transparency and accountability.

We spent a lot of time exploring the pain point of poor community within their organization. Not every member has a phone or reception in their village, so many of them don’t receive some messages or notifications until it’s too late. I’ve grown accustomed to technology and instantly sending an email to hundreds of people. But not everyone is able to communicate in that manner. It was important to explore solutions that were realistic for them to implement successfully.

Transparency seemed to be a big thing and we needed to break down why it was important to be transparent in leadership. Whether it’s in this organization, in their homes, at their churches or in politics, they were able to understand the importance of sharing information across the organization for the benefit of all.

To say I was tired was an understatement. It was the first day I didn’t have to travel more than 1 hr each way. Traveling since Friday, sleeping on planes and in cars on long drives caught up with me but I pushed through.

Still grateful af tho!

ā€œMwabuka butiā€ (good morning)

Day 1 on assignment started with our first trip from Choma to Kalomo here in the Southern Region of Zambia. The purpose of this trip is to facilitate leadership and organizational development trainings and workshops for the members of the Kaloma District Women’s Development Association. We have 10 board members and about 15 or so general members of the organization that are able to come out this week.

Kalomo District Women Development Association (KDWDA) is a registered Community-based Organization. It is a women-led organization created and established with goal of improving the socio-economic and legal situation of vulnerable rural women in Kalomo District of Southern province. The goal of the organization is to improve the living conditions and increase self-reliance of rural women and children in Kalomo district.

We started off with a SWOT analysis and jumped right in with foundational leadership frameworks. One of my favorite frameworks comes from The Leadership Challenge, so we explored 5 principles of leadership. We also explored and identified personal and organizational values, as we wanted to focus on ethical leadership and a values-led organization.

After the workshop, they prepared lunch and they made Nshima, the staple dish of Zambia. It was pretty good, to me, it tasted like grits and I think I got the hang of eating with my hand.

All in all, day 1 was pretty good. ā˜ŗļø

Thanks to , I can proudly say I’ve studied leadership for 19 years now! I’m in Zambia for the next couple of weeks facilitating leadership and organizational development for a group of women leaders and I had to start with one of my favorite leadership frameworks. I am so grateful to be a and that the President’s Leadership Academy prepared me to implement leadership strategies and share my leadership experience on a global level. It’s the last day of 🌈, can we talk about it? Ok, so most straight people are homophobic because they’ve been socialized to be. Unless you do the real work to acknowledge and challenge the prejudices, biases and hate you’ve been conditioned to hold, you will remain homophobic.

Keeping it real, a lot of y’all are fine with being homophobic. For many, social justice and inclusion only apply to race and when it comes to LGBTQ+ issues, you tap out and use your faith as a weapon.

These ignorant attitudes, beliefs and behaviors lead to prejudice, discrimination and violence towards the q***r community. Now most people know someone that’s gay, have you ever wondered how safe they feel around you?

Just like having a Black friend or relative doesn’t mean a White person isn’t racist, neither doesn’t having a gay friend or relative mean a straight person can’t still be homophobic.

Now I know ā€œprobablyā€ could be removed from most slides, so remove it if you want, the message still applies.

I’ll be breaking down concepts like these in my newsletter. The first issue goes out next month! Join my newsletter, link in my bio.

šŸŽ¬Season 36 šŸ„³šŸŽˆ

To me, every birthday is a milestone, no matter the year. I never take growing older for granted and I’m grateful AF to celebrate another year of life!
I’m always over the top and doing the absolute most šŸ’šŸ¾ā€ā™€ļø. This year was no different.

BDay snapshot:

1. 5/20 šŸŽ‚Seattle v Vegas
3. W girlie since ā€˜97
5. 5/21 Phoenix v Chicago
7. 5/22 Grand Canyon
8. 5/23 Sedona
9. 5/23 More Sedona

I’ve wanted to go to the Grand Canyon since 2017, but I never had anyone that really wanted to go with me. This year, I felt like just doing everything I wanted to do for my birthday, which included seeing my favorite players opening weekend, seeing Brittney Griner in person, and finally going to the Grand Canyon. I did it all alone because I only wanted to focus on myself. I didn’t want to convince anybody, wait on anybody, or consider anybody for once. No, I wasn’t lonely, I actually enjoyed and preferred the solitude on this excursion.

I had a BLAST, you hear me? I met people along the way, ate amazing food, and enjoyed God’s craftsmanship.

As I wandered about and marveled at the beauty around me, I remembered what said ā€œI belong everywhereā€ and I carried that with me all trip.

Here’s to the mid-30’s, I love it over here!
