We already had 3 boys and gave up on our dream of a daughter; then my husband called me to the hospital holding a newborn girl — when he whispered his confession, I broke down in the hallway.
My husband called me from a hospital on a Tuesday afternoon.
"I need you to come. There's a baby here."
"James — whose baby?"
"Please. Just come."
I drove there in the shirt I'd been cleaning the kitchen in.
You have to understand what the word baby does in our house.
We have three boys.
Nine, seven, and four. Loud, filthy, wonderful.
And after the third one, my doctor sat across from us with my chart open and asked James to come in and sit down too, because she wanted him to hear it from her and not from me.
She said the word probably. Not could, not there's a risk.
She said a fourth pregnancy would probably kill me, and that if it didn't, I'd likely spend most of it in a hospital bed away from the three children I already had.
I asked her whether there was any version where it was safe.
She said no. I asked her twice more, in different words, over the next two years. The answer never changed.
We wanted a daughter. God, we wanted one.
I had a name picked out since I was nineteen.
James never said much about it, but he was the one who kept the box of newborn things in the garage instead of giving it away, and every time I said we should finally get rid of it, he'd say next month.
I stopped bringing it up. He stopped bringing it up. That's what closing a subject looks like when it isn't actually closed — you just stop putting it into words.
The last time I let myself talk about it, he took my hand and said, "Our boys need their mother more than we need a daughter."
He meant it. I believed him.
I thought that was the end of it for the rest of our lives.
Then, eleven years into our marriage, my husband stood at the end of a maternity corridor with his coat still on and his eyes red, and I have never once seen that man cry.
There was a plastic bassinet in the room behind him. I could see the corner of it through the glass.
"I need you to sit down," he said.
"James, tell me why I'm here."
He looked at the floor for a long moment.
