History Basically Repeating itself

Before Pol Pot: This house (Cambodia) had doors and windows to the outside world. People could come and go, trade things, learn from others, and communicate with neighbors.
Pol Pot's Plan (Closing the House): Pol Pot and his group (the Khmer Rouge) had a very strange and dangerous idea. They believed that to make their country "pure" and "strong," they had to get rid of everything they thought was bad or "foreign."
So, they decided to:
* Slam All the Doors Shut: They completely cut off Cambodia from other countries. No more trading, no more visitors, no more news from outside. It was like putting up a huge, impenetrable wall around the entire country.
* Board Up All the Windows: They also stopped all internal communication and movement. People couldn't easily travel between cities or even villages. Families were split up. There were no phones, no mail, no newspapers that weren't controlled by them.
* Throw Out Everything "Modern": They hated cities, modern technology, education, and even money. They wanted everyone to be a farmer, working the land with their hands, just like they imagined people lived a long, long time ago. They emptied out cities, forcing everyone into the countryside.
* Get Rid of Anyone "Different": If you were educated, spoke a foreign language, wore glasses (because it suggested you read a lot), or even just had soft hands, you were seen as a threat. They wanted to create a society where everyone was the same, doing exactly what they were told.
The Result (What Happened Inside the Closed House):
Because the "house" was completely closed off and controlled so tightly:
* No Food, No Help: When things went wrong (like bad harvests), there was no way for food or help to come in from outside. People starved because they couldn't get supplies, and the government didn't care or couldn't help.
* No Information, No Escape: People had no idea what was really happening beyond their small area. They couldn't ask for help or try to escape because they were isolated and constantly watched.
* Terror and Death: With no outside eyes watching, Pol Pot and his followers could do whatever they wanted. They murdered anyone who didn't fit their idea of a "pure" Cambodian, or anyone who dared to question them. They executed millions of their own people.
* Lost Knowledge: Teachers, doctors, engineers – anyone with skills and knowledge – were targeted and killed. This meant the country lost all its experience and expertise, making it even harder to survive and rebuild.
So, in short, Pol Pot's idea was to completely isolate Cambodia and force everyone into a very specific, primitive way of life. This extreme isolation, combined with his brutal ideology, led to a catastrophe where millions of people died from starvation, overwork, and ex*****on, with no one able to intervene or even know the full extent of the horror until much later.
