Kidney for Amelia

Six months post-transplant!! Time really has flown by. Although we have had some setbacks, overall we remain positive and have spent more days at home versus the hospital. Honestly, I thought this day would feel like more of a milestone. However, like many things in life, the significance is not really understood until years after the event. We still remain concerned about the BK virus, but we will not let that dampen our spirits because Amelia doesn’t let it impact her. One day at a time, we are racking up the wins.

Since this six month milestone falls in the middle of National Donate Life month, we wanted to take the opportunity to thank Amelia’s angel donor and all organ donors and their families that supported the decision. There is not a day that goes by that we do not think about our donor family, their loss, and the wonderful gift they gave our daughter. We look forward to the day when we can thank them in person.

Please keep the donor family and Amelia in your prayers. We have a huge appointment on Monday and we are hoping for some good results!!💚💙

Happy 4th Birthday Amelia !!!! We love you. You are so special, loving, beautiful, kind, funny, and BRAVE. 💕🎉💕

I always joke with Matt that there was one last nap that I should have taken before Amelia was born. How could I have known the challenges that Amelia would face in her first four years. We had our coats on and Amelia was in her car seat when we learned of the cysts on Amelia’s one existing kidney. We were rushed to Children’s hospital. How could I have known that the DMC Children’s hospital would become a second home. How could I have known that 5lb baby girl would grow to almost 35lbs? How could I have known all the fantastic doctors, nurses, and staff would grow to become such integral parts of our lives? Looking back, it almost seems unbelievable and tiring (I don’t think one nap would have done the trick).

Even with all the sleepless nights, time spent in the hospital, and hours upon hours of gut wrenching worrying, I wouldn’t trade Amelia for any other child in the world.

P.S. Happy Birthday Kidney Phyllis (3 months old)!!!! We love you too. We pray that we have many birthdays to celebrate with you. We picked the name Phyllis because Phyllis with hope and urine. ☺️

Amelia and I are at Children's hospital this early morning . Amelia is having her stent removed from her ureter today. Hopefully this is the last procedure she will need for a while where she has to go under anesthesia. Please keep Amelia in your prayers and wish us luck that next week the ultrasound and lab results look good.🙏🏼 Check out her pink cape ☺️

We are so blessed this Christmas. Obviously our Christmas came early in the form of a new kidney. However, I can’t help but to have a heavy heart when I think of Amelia’s donor family. This is their first Christmas without a loved one. I can’t even imagine their feelings. I hope they can have some comfort in the thought their loved one touched so many people with the selfless act of becoming an organ donor. Please keep them in your prayers this Christmas.

Merry Christmas 🎄

Today marks two months post transplant. Although the kidney is working, we are not out of the woods yet. Those stubborn antibodies.👎🏼 Actually, we will never be out of the woods, because a transplant can last 2 months, it can last 1 year, it can last 15 years (average for a deceased kidney). These first six months however are the most critical.
Flu season is here, along with pneumonia, RSV, and a slew of other respiratory viruses that have the capability of making any normal child very ill. A flu for you may mean chicken soup and a few days in bed but for Amelia it means a hospital admission and a lot of pokes and tests. The scariest part however is what that cold or sickness can do to Amelia’s immune system.
When someone has a transplant of any type their body will automatically attack the new organ due to it being a foreign object. The only way to stop this from happening is for them to take medication every 12 hours for the rest of their life, these are called immune suppressants and they wipe out your immune system which is what our body uses to fight off bugs and infections. This stops your body from finding the organ and trying to kill it. It's really difficult to get the correct level of immunosuppressant in the blood, if it's too high it will damage the kidneys which could result in kidney failure and if it's too low it will cause rejection of the new organ. If medications are not taken on time, or missed, it may cause rejection. Beside missed meds, most rejections happen as a result of an illness, which revs up the immune system to fight it off, and while in full-blown attack mode, it finds the foreign organ.
It’s so imperative to be extra cautious to ensure that she does not contract one of these seasonal illnesses. Some of these may be airborne, which is why she wears a mask and anyone else around her may be required to wear a mask and some can be contracted by poor hand hygiene and/or simply coming in contact with an infected person. For example, the stomach flu. Just because a person does not have symptoms today does not indicate that they won’t in 72 hours. 😳 This is why it is so important for patients to stay healthy, and why parents of transplanted kids may seem a little crazy.
AGAIN!!! Her new kidney is not a cure only a bandaid. I keep germs away so I can have my daughter. Transplant life can be isolating and difficult to explain to others, but as one transplant mom shared with me, we have one chance to get it right, and these first six months are crucial. It's such an emotional roller coaster and the worrying never goes away. This Christmas is going to be different. Between the immunosuppressants and treatments it's just too much of a risk to be around so many people. That means we are staying inside our little bubble and keeping the germs away.

Please wash your hands and stay away if you are sick or have been around anyone who has been sick 😷🤒🤚

Here is a picture of Amelia giving her daddy an IV. How many 3 year olds do that? Another cute thing Amelia does is when my alarm goes off for her meds. She likes to yell out Tacro time. 😂 As in the movie Trolls.... Hug time☺️

This article hit home for us with Amelia. She is a strong little lady and we want her to be proud of who she is. It may not be ideal to spend so much time in the hospital, but Amelia looks forward to seeing her Doctors and Nurses at her monthly appointments. She has a special bond with the medical staff that only kids like her can understand and appreciate. Kidney Disease is just a small part of Amelia, she is so much more than her health condition.💪🏻💕
