Demolition has officially begun at Detroit’s historic Thomas M. Cooley High School.

The school opened in 1928 and closed in 2010. After years of sitting vacant, the building is being demolished due to safety concerns and the high cost of restoration. The site is expected to become a new athletic complex.

Detroit is giving out more than $1 million in small business grants this fall, split across five programs.

Green Grocer: up to $25,000 for small grocers and independent food retailers. Closes mid-August, so this is the urgent one.

Motor City Match: about $50,000 on average for new brick-and-mortar businesses. September 1 to October 1.

NextUp313: $1,500 to $10,000 for owners between 18 and 30. August 24 to October 5.

Legacy Business Project: $5,000 to $50,000 for businesses that have been open 30 years or more. August 24 to October 5.

Detroit Startup Fund: $15,000 and $50,000 for scalable tech startups. August 31 to October 5.

All five run through the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation at degc.org, and their team works with applicants one-on-one, so the help isn't only the money.
