And they have vegan options

We have taken a break from social media to think about our place in the world and our role in our community. Spacecat’s core mission has always been to create a space that everyone can call their own, where they are accepted and applauded for who they are and where they can feel comfortable in their own skin. We believe in kindness and justice and love and equality. When we finally open our doors, we promise to be an active force for good in the community. We promise to listen and learn and work to be better each day. #spacecatvstro #vegetariancomfortfood #ferndalesmallbusiness

Chive Kitchen

Hi all, I know that this has been a hard week, a hard few months and for many a hard life. Many times things must get hard before they get better. Where I try to divide my personal beliefs from a public business I also have to use my voice to project the right and w**d out the wrong.

I stand with my black brothers and sisters. Those I have known, those I have never met and especially those that are a part of my daily life.

Where many might have deep opinions on the anger that has played out over the past week; that is ok. We are allowed to have opinions. But this is when everyone needs to challenge their own thoughts. This is when everyone needs to close their eyes and understand the true meaning of empathy. The true meaning of justice for all. The true meaning of equality.

We can think of any excuse or scenario to water down this situation; that is fine, we are humans and we are thinkers. But reel it back in. Black Lives Matter. We cannot go past that to any watered down version of any movement. Reel it back in- Black Lives Matter. Let us start there, begin there and stay there until black communities and families can move forward. I cannot dictate when black communities are ready to move forward, society has dictated that for them for too long.

I created Chive Kitchen as a compilation of my life from growing up in the Bay Area, immigrant parents and my love for all cultures and their history. On a busy night when I would look out into the dining room and witness a sea of beautiful colors and diversity; I felt accomplished.

But what happens when everyone leaves for the night? My black employees would take a deep breath after a long 12 hour shift and pull out of the parking lot and hope that they would not get pulled over "again". My black employees would hold their breath as they went to cash their paycheck and hope that the bank would not give them a hard time "again". I have spent time on the phone with banks, stores and police stations trying to find out why the police were called when my employee who had worked a hard week by my side couldn't cash their check. Because standing in line to cash your paycheck and having the police called on you is embarrassing.

The systematic racism is weaved in so tightly through generations that there is a lot of work ahead of us. Let us all think, change our way of thinking, question ourselves and find that empathy and compassion for people outside of our everyday realms.

"Looking into someones eyes changes the entire conversation"

Much love to everyone. Be good, be brave and be blessed.

Chive Kitchen

Sigh.

Good morning all,

I had the pleasure of chatting with Mark Kurlyandchik, the Restaurant Critic for the Detroit Free Press, yesterday afternoon. It was an opportunity to vocalize the facts of what is ahead for Chive Kitchen and many restaurants. After much analysis over the past month I have come to the conclusion that Chive Kitchen as we knew it will never be again.

I know there were many reasons people loved Chive and I am honored. My goal was to bring to town something that felt like my living room at home. I have been trying to reformat Chive into an expression of my creative emotion, where everyone can enjoy it for themselves, in their own living room. "En Casa".

We have continued to get busier with our online store and prepared meals. I have been deeply enjoying crafting the menus and cooking. Our favorite part of the day is when everyone comes to pick up their bags. It makes us happy.

I have many ideas for the dining room as a more casual place where people can pop in for a drink or coffee while orders are being picked up and shelves shopped. But this might not happen this year. I know people want everything to open up and get back to normal, but it won't be normal. Until I feel safe as I follow the science, I will try to keep my family, team and customers safe.

There is more to come. We can't boil the ocean and Rome was not built in a day. Catering and weddings will continue to be our focus as I love my couples and being a part of their day. Once we are in a safer place I plan to have more of our ticketed coursed dinners, but with less people.

I promise where things might not be the same, I will work very hard so that Chive still exists providing vegan food and products and my Suzy vibe ;)

Many thanks to those who have stood by me and supported me in many ways. You know who you are.

Much love to all - Suzy

:(

Hello all, after a good thought out re-structure we still decided that it is best to close up shop. We tried to create a smooth zero contact carry out system but I think the point was being missed and it was just an unsafe situation for the cause at hand.

To the customers that worked with us we appreciate you. I have been in touch with many of you and hope we can continue to work together with a prepared meal service. Not sure what any of this means for the future of Chive but only time will tell. We are all in the same boat, riding the wave together. Things will continue to get harder and everyone needs to have each others back.

It's pawpaw season! Though North America's largest native fruit has fallen into obscurity, it was well known amongst native peoples. This month was known in Shawnee as Asiminikisathwa - the pawpaw moon.
