The Athletic listed, Sebastian Cossa as a loser for free agency;

“In speaking with a few goalie coaches around the league, 100 games in the minors is considered a good amount for a young goalie prospect. Considering Cossa’s pedigree one would expect fewer for him, especially when you add in the fact that Detroit hasn’t exactly been settled in net.

Trey Augustine, whom Detroit drafted in the second round in 2023, has looked great at Michigan State and with Team USA at the World Junior Championship. He’ll soon be nipping at Cossa’s heels. The big, athletic Hamilton, Ont. native needs an impressive camp, and an even more impressive season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, to maintain his place as Detroit’s goalie of the future.”

I can’t believe that’s all it took. I would’ve done that.

Mason Appleton is a solid two-way depth forward. Facing tougher matchups with defensive starts, he holds possession, finishes shots efficiently, and contributes positively in goals. Not a standout play-driver, but consistently dependable—ideal as a hardworking third-line pivot.

It also remains to be seen if the Red Wings are done making moves, as Detroit still has more than $11 million in cap space. But in signing the 29-year-old Appleton to a fairly inexpensive short-term deal, the Red Wings have added to their depth and given themselves a veteran role player. — Max Bultman, Red Wings beat reporter

Good article from The Athletic; Little snippet

The Red Wings’ best player, Dylan Larkin, is soon to be 29. Their top goal scorer, Alex DeBrincat, is two years from unrestricted free agency. Their biggest source of star power, Patrick Kane, is 36 and already on his third consecutive one-year deal.

Detroit was never likely to be a Stanley Cup contender in 2025-26, and there’s no doubting the scale of the turnaround job Yzerman signed up for. However, for a team with those key pillars in those circumstances, every year outside the playoffs at this point is a wasted opportunity.

And while van Riemsdyk is a nice addition as a veteran scorer (whose 16 goals last season would have ranked sixth on the Red Wings), and Gibson certainly an upgrade on the team’s talent in goal, Detroit’s path to the postseason still hasn’t gotten much clearer than what it was at the beginning of the summer.

After a couple of hit-and-miss offseasons in 2022 and 2023 as the team started to try to compete, Yzerman does seem to have drawn a line and avoided any albatross contracts this time around. That’s something. But the broader goals and needs of this offseason still hang in the balance.

Can Yzerman get creative and find a way to solve them? Or will the ominous internal-improvement fallback plan be all that remains?

That’s the question Detroit is left with, after a July 1 that didn’t move the needle.

Red Wings get 29th, and 60th best player in Free Agency per Athletic. What they wrote;

On JBD - Not tendered a qualifying offer by the Buffalo Sabres, Bernard-Docker is a mobile right-shot defenseman who plays an all-around game. He’s got decent size and may have some room to grow on the offensive side of the puck.

On JVR - The veteran winger scored 15 even-strength goals for Columbus last season, which is a sign that the hands are still there. He’s a big guy who has the ability to get to the net and find a way to put the puck home from in close once he arrives. A good pro who is closing in on 1,100 career games, van Riemsdyk is a positive influence for younger players
