The High School Journalism Workshop (JSHOP) is a free workshop scheduled from August 15-19 for local high school students during the Virtual Convention & Career Fair.
High students from across the country may apply. The JSHOP's goal is to provide an enlightening, informative, hands-on, and challenging introduction to the journalism profession to a multicultural group of high school students. The workshop provides interactive learning opportunities through lectures, presentations, and hands-on training. The students learn multimedia journalism fundamentals for newsgathering, writing, photography, video production, radio, graphic design, editing and social media.
Professional journalists, educators, and journalism college students provide mentorship and supervision.
By the conclusion of the workshop, participants will leave with a portfolio of professionally-developed media works including articles, photographs, and video clips. Also, the students will have a greater sense of what the journalism profession entails and a strong foundation to help them to pursue journalism at their high schools, in college, and as a career.
Criteria Requirements
- All students, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation, are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Attend a high school in the United States
- Be in good academic standing
- Have a strong interest in pursuing a career in journalism
- Must be covered by health insurance
- Previous experience in journalism is preferred, but not required to apply
- Completion of the application requirements

Hi, this is Aaliyah Marie. I am location on my tour in the south. Our trip to New Orleans was cancelled due to Hurricane Barry. We stayed back in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. My grandma was quite sad about the early closure of her national convention for her sorority. We traveled to Montgomery, Alabama to visit the Legacy Museum.
