Freedom House Detroit is the only full-service asylum agency in the border city of Detroit, and in the state of Michigan. An asylum seeker has left their home country in order to survive. They’ve been persecuted because of their gender, religion, political affiliation or tribe.
We're thrilled to see Elizabeth Orozco-Vasquez has taken over the role as CEO of Freedom House Detroit, as her dedication to their work and the community is influential across multiple platforms.
Data shows that refugees are more likely to create jobs than other migrant groups or native-born citizens. Starting a business requires risk-taking, resilience, and determination, and many refugees’ life experiences have provided them with these skills, making them excellent entrepreneurs.
An influx of refugees can also increase a host country’s gross domestic product. Taking in large numbers of refugees is often costly at first. However, tax-payers’ money going to social services, job-training programs, and integration efforts can be viewed as an investment. Research shows that it results in a net gain to the economy.
When a country invests in welcoming refugees, it not only does the right thing morally, i.e., helps the world’s most vulnerable people in their time of need, but also promotes economic growth and creates a more positive future for all its residents.
To support Freedom House's work, and the influx of asylum seekers, they are asking for small donations that will aid in continuing their crucial programming.

Marlo Rencher, director of technology-based programs at TechTown, witnessed many Black-owned businesses unfold when the pandemic hit. To help migrate losses, TechTown administered an emergency fund in 2020 to provide working capital grants in amounts of $5,000.
Now, through some of the funding mechanisms in place at TechTown, Rencher is teaching business owners to be more strategic, with building a credit history as a big focus.
