In 1954, the United Fruit Company—the precursor to Chiquita Bananas—felt threatened by Guatemala’s democratic reforms that aimed to return unused farmland to its people. So, it turned to the U.S. government, painting the new Guatemalan leadership as communist. The CIA answered with Operation PBSUCCESS, a covert coup that toppled President Jacobo Árbenz and shattered the country’s fragile democracy.

What followed was not liberation—but devastation. Guatemala plunged into a brutal 36-year civil war, fueled by fear and foreign interest. Over 200,000 lives were lost—most of them innocent civilians, many Indigenous. Entire communities were erased, and generations grew up in the shadow of violence and trauma.

All for bananas.
All to protect profits.
