Master public speaking by george grice
15 minute insight
This reading session was intense, during this reading session I reviewed what the referent was from last week's reading session. When using the three elements of communication it is important to remember people create the message, words and symbols do not. And the message can mean different interpretations to each individual. Even when starting a business, you have to try and make sure your message matches what your audience hears.
Followed by the brief public speaking review I dived into the Level of Communication. There are 5 levels of communication, most people will use 2-3 levels during their lifetime.
⚡️Intrapersonal Communication: This is the first form of communication that occurs within yourself, you will take a conscious purpose: evaluating tasks, how you did in a situation or planning for the following week.
⚡️Interpersonal Communication: When the conversation moves on to communicating between two people, this is called interpersonal communication. Whether face to face, direct messaging, or by telephone.
⚡️Group Communication: Now we are involving more people into this type of communication. This type of communication will involve 3 or more people who share the same interest or goals on a specific topic. In other words having a “group identity”, now this doesn’t mean everyone will agree on the same thing, it simply means they have a sense of belonging.
⚡️Public Communication: Now depending on the industry public speaking will come along to take its place. Public speaking takes shape when a speaker is speaking in front of an audience. This is a one way direction flow of communication between speaker and audience. This is the most formal type of communication but can be made informal depending on the circumstances.
⚡️Mass Communication: The last form of communication is mass communication, mass communication occurs when the audience becomes too large to attend in one place. Normally this will look like television, newspaper, mobile devices – print or electronic mediums. One characteristic, if someone is choosing this type of communication for their business the feedback will always be delayed. Depending on how often the business owner is checking for feedback. The second characteristic, the method of how the message will be transmitted is very important. In terms of advertising, advertisements can have the potential to reach different sizes and types of audiences, social media, websites, television, etc.
Elements of Communication:
📍Speaker: The individual who is the sender, encoder (transmitting the ideas into symbols), or source of the message
📍Message: The ideas that the speaker or individual is actually communicating, the message starts with the speaker then the speaker chooses the form the message will take place.
📍Listener: The individual who is receiving the message by attaching meaning words, gestures, or vocal inflections
Feedback: This will include verbal and non-verbal messages sent by the listener/receiver.
📍Channel: How the message was sent, examples of this will look like (1) Vocal elements including–rate, volume, pitch (2) Visual elements including– eye contact, facial expressions, gestures/movements, etc.
Public Speaker as Critical Thinker
I learned that the more you engage in public speaking the better your critical thinking skills will sharpen. Critical thinking involves reasonable reflective thinking on processing what to do or believe.
One thing I would do going forward, I would pay more attention to how messages are delivered and the type of audience it is being directed to. This could help with advertising and developing organic SEO, once I learned how to better my communication skills on the platforms that I choose
