HOW TO BE MORE EFFICIENT WITHOUT SACRIFICING THE QUALITY OF YOUR CLEAN
Being efficient with your time does NOT mean rushing through a client's home.
The goal isn't to see how many houses you can cram into one day. The goal is to learn how to manage your schedule, your routine, and your time so every client gets the attention their home deserves without you spending all day there.
1. DON'T OVERBOOK YOURSELF
If fitting three houses into one day means you're going to be rushing, skipping things, or cutting corners...don't book three houses.
Balance your schedule based on the size of the homes AND the frequency of the cleans.
For example:
• Two smaller homes may work well on the same day.
• Avoid putting two large homes together.
• I wouldn't schedule two monthly cleans on the same day.
• Pairing a weekly clean with a biweekly clean can help balance your workload.
Your schedule should be built around what you can realistically accomplish while maintaining your standard not around squeezing in as much money as possible.
2. FIND A ROUTINE THAT WORKS FOR EACH HOME
I've shared my cleaning routine before because having a system absolutely helps you become faster.
But here's the thing:
The exact same routine isn't necessarily going to work perfectly in every house.
Some homes flow better starting in the kitchen. Some may make more sense starting upstairs. Some clients have kids, pets, home offices, or rooms you need to work around.
Have a general system, but learn each house and figure out the most efficient routine for THAT home.
3. COMMUNICATE EXPECTATIONS WITH YOUR CLIENTS
This is a BIG one.
Make sure your clients understand exactly what is included in their service.
When the client knows the scope, you don't have to spend the entire clean wondering:
"Should I be doing this too?"
For example, if your maintenance service includes spot-cleaning cabinets, communicate that.
You shouldn't feel pressured to completely scrub and wash every cabinet during a maintenance clean when that isn't even part of the service the client purchased.
A clear scope prevents overcleaning and overcleaning is one of the easiest ways to turn a three-hour job into a five-hour job.
4. GIVE YOURSELF TIME GOALS
Set a realistic timeframe for the entire home AND individual rooms.
Use a timer while you're cleaning not because you're going to drop everything when the timer goes off, but because it teaches you where your time is actually going.
As a starting point, you might give yourself:
• Smaller bathroom: around 15–30 minutes
• Larger/primary bathroom: around 30–45 minutes
• Kitchen: around 45–60 minutes
• Bedrooms/general rooms that only need dusting and vacuuming: around 15 minutes each
And a general benchmark you can practice toward is approximately one hour per 1,000 square feet for an established maintenance clean.
These aren't hard rules. Every house, condition, scope, and cleaner is different. They're TIME GOALS that can help you identify where you're losing time.
If the kitchen consistently takes you an hour and a half, ask yourself why.
Is it your routine?
Are you using the wrong product?
Are you waiting too long for products to work?
Are you going back and forth to your caddy?
Are you cleaning things outside your scope?
Are you getting distracted?
That's how you improve.
5. REMEMBER SPEED COMES WITH EXPERIENCE
You don't become faster by simply moving your hands faster.
You become faster because you learn.
You learn your products.
You learn your tools.
You learn which techniques work.
You learn how to organize your supplies.
You learn the homes.
You learn your routine.
And you learn what IS and ISN'T included in the service.
Practice it. Time yourself. Educate yourself. Adjust what isn't working.
Eventually, the things that used to take you 30 minutes may take you 15.
Being fast because you're skilled is completely different from being fast because you're rushed.
