In almost every ocean on Earth, a sunken wooden ship is devoured within a single decade. Wood-boring shipworms and deep-sea bacteria strip the timber down to an unrecognizable skeleton.

The Black Sea operates by a different set of physical laws.

Below five hundred feet lies a permanent anoxic dead zone saturated with lethal concentrations of hydrogen sulfide. Zero oxygen. Zero biological life. Zero decomposition.

When deep-sea robotic rovers descended into this chemical vacuum, their floodlights revealed an impossible sight: over sixty intact ancient Greek, Roman, and Byzantine trading vessels resting upright on the seabed.
